:? I have heard of people liking to play guitars with stiff action, but that's about as far as it goes. What in the world do you like about playing a guitar that doesn't like to stay in tune? IMO, there is nothing worse than hearing somebody play an out of tune guitar.

I mostly play bass. I have one bass that is harder to play than the rest. I use it for home practice. It makes me a stronger player on the other ones, so I see your point there. However not staying in tune is an issue I'd have to address.

Playing wise, I am a proponent of maximum efficiency with minimal effort. I couldn't tolerate an instrument (and I use that term loosely in this context) which not only gave me a 'hard workout' but wouldn't stay in tune.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

Agreed.

You may not be entirely alone.

But you should be.

Imagine such a statement on a forum frequented by players of any other instrument - just remove "guitar" and insert "piano" - and you'll see how silly it is.

Working your hands "too hard" can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome.

I somewhat understand the joy of playing a guitar that is a bit more of a challenge--maybe playing someone else's guitar with a different setup or string gauge than mine.

But I refuse to play an instrument that won't stay in tune, no matter what the instrument is...if it won't stay in tune and I can't get it repaired to do so, that instrument will be sold as soon as possible, no matter what it's other qualities may be.

I don't necessarily agree with the whole stiff action bit, but I can see a little bit of the appeal of an electric guitar that you need to "fight with."

This thread makes me think of Jack White. Playing live, he's a beast. He's constantly pushing his equipment to its limit, making music that he enjoys (maybe not everyone enjoys it).

Just last night, before I had read this thread, I was screwing around with my wah and trem, seeing what kind of feedback I could get out of my strat. I felt very Hendrixy, and I actually attempted my version of the intro to Foxy Lady a few times, to awesome effect.

I know that to anyone listening, I probably sounded like I had no idea what I was doing, but I was having a blast, and I learned how to get some pretty unique sounds out of my guitar that I wouldn't have discovered otherwise. That said, though, I don't think my guitar is poorly set up. It was mildly out of tune from the trem dives I was doing, but its not like I'm letting the guitar go to crap or anything.

Long story short, I do see the appeal of challenging yourself with a different/difficult position.

I like a well balanced guitar, easy to play, stays in tune, and as effortless as possible to play. I have had guitars that were beasts, they don't last long in my collection.

98% of my guitars are a delight to play. The other one is the one I let other guys play when they don't bring a guitar of their own to jam.

I wouldn't be able to derive any enjoyment playing an instrument that's poorly set up and in constant need of tuning.Anything that inhibits your playing in any way is potentially damaging to both your playing style and more importantly your hands.

I spent most of my life playing junk guitars. Until a fue years ago I thought they were all like that. Now when I run across a guitar that displays the slightest bit of brutality, I go the other way. 8) My hands hurt bad enough as it is. :)

you guys are freaking out about staying in tune. im not talking like you do one bend and its done. sory i should be more clear ok compare a guitar with a floyd and a gibson fire bird with a wammy what happens when you do dive bombs. i just love guitars like this just abusing them killing the amp (which im going through my second one line 6 sucks). but its like a old italian car no good for anything but you just want it for its soul for what it is.
