Typically I use my Vibroverb with the Treb and Bass on 6 (there is no Mids adjustment) and I only use one pedal at a time, overdrive, unless I use a delay. I've found that even by dropping the VV Bass down to 3 and putting the over drive tone very high, around 3 o'clock, the recorded sound is still kinda dark.

I read this again--what Vibroverb do you have? Black face/Black Tolex or Brown face/Brown Tolex?

I know the treble knob on the '63 Brown face has a "tapped circuit" at 5--meaning the treble is "flat" at 5--turning it up past 5 boosts the treble but turning it down lower than 5 cuts the treble...great for getting a rich, bassy, heavy tone, but terrible for phase-cancelling with a bassist, if you're not careful.

Knowing that you're an SRV fan, I assume you have the '64 Black face or the SRV/Diaz reissue; I don't think it has the tapped treble circuit like the Brown '63, but if it does you might pump up your treble a bit.

Spot on SA, it's one of the '64 Custom Vibroverb RI's with the Diaz mods (I don't use the mods though).

Pardon me for chiming in so late. I am pretty sure that a Vibroverb is a really good guitar amp, open backed cab with a pair of 10 inch guitar speakers. There is at least part of your problem. You need to try a 12 inch speaker. Patch into a 1x12 cab and see if that helps.

The VV I have is equiped with a 15" speaker.

Ceri gets it right... if it sounds good in the room and it sounds good as a solo track, then what you've got is a EQ problem. Well, EQ and also probably a basic tracking mistake.

Start here:

1. Re-track the part and use less overdrive. Yeah, it sounds awesome by itself but it turns to mud in the mix. Just crank it down a bit, and make up for it by playing with more energy. Those overdriven parts you love on famous records usually have a lot less fur on them than you think.

2. EQ the track using this as a starting point: CUT by 2 db or so a 2.0Q band centered around 300hz. Try sweeping the center from 250 to 400 to see what works best with your track. Then, also BOOST about 1 db or so a 2.0Q band centered close to 4K, for definition, and turn the whole track down about 1 db.

That oughta do it.

Spot on SA, it's one of the '64 Custom Vibroverb RI's with the Diaz mods (I don't use the mods though).

As much as I love my Vibroverb, I sometimes miss that "MID" tone knob...since the MID frequencies are kinda already set in stone, I've found it useful to use an EQ pedal or an overdrive that has some extra EQ knobs (like the Danelectro Daddy-O).

A treble boost pedal like the Keeley Java Boost or an old Dallas Rangemaster might be a useful tool, but it will add some top end to your overall tone (without removing the bass).

I found using my MXR Micro Amp pedal kinda just gives "more of me" in my signal; it is supposed to be just a clean volume boost, but it seems to smooth out some harder edges to my tone (kinda like a compressor, but less drastic).

I'm able to use less overdrive (as EgFryer suggested) but I still get plenty of punch and richness using that MXR Micro Amp.

Dave has a point, though...some speakers emphasize specific frequencies, and maybe the 15" speaker isn't kicking out what you need in a mix...patching into another speaker cab might help (a bunch of people do this and SRV himself did this on occasion in studio, if I recall correctly).

I would try an EQ pedal first, or EQ on the board/mixer.

Let us know what you find...
