My first band was three guys I was in high school with. Everyone wanted to be in a band in the 60s. There certainly doesn't seem to be any shortage of wannabes these days at the local GC... and the local message boards are crowded with parts of bands trying to find people to round out their groups. Look around. If you want to be in a band, there's no reason not to.

My second band in 1966. I'm the one who is highest up.

My favorite method is still good old word of mouth. I'll go around to local music ahops and ask the employees and any customers that may be around if they know and musicians looking to start a band. Also craiglist is a good place to look.

Your best bet is to check local musician publications or newspapers.A lot of music stores offer wall space for musicians forming bands as well store staff usually has a pretty good grasp about what's going on in your local music scene.Check around your school friends and see if they know anyone who is also looking-word of mouth can be the best advertising of all and it's free.Lots of luck,I'm sure that you'll find some guys to play with in no time.

Networking in person is best. Go see and support other local bands. Talk to them on breaks. Talk to their sound tech too as some techs work with several bands and knows more musicians than the guys actually in the band, plus you never know when you'll need a good tech.

Networking online via Craigslist, etc works to a certain extent. But you must be pretty specific in what you are looking for in a Craigslist ad. You will hear from lots of flakes and have to sort out the flakes from the possibilities. People who think they can play or sing well but actually can't have to be sorted too and you just about have to find out first hand. You may meet or play or audition with 20 people before you find just one that you think you fit in with, so don't get discouraged. Your band is out there, even if you have to start it yourself. For the band I'm in now, it took me years to find the right mix of people to make it enjoyable and occasionally profitable too.
