Don't do that kind of thing anymore but I did in the early days.
'You're A Better Man Than I' The Yardbirds, is one I loved playing, great little solo in that. Give it some fuzz and reverb...nice!! 8)

I almost always put my own signature on songs but every now and then I like to try and master a song note for note just to see if I can do it.

I have never, ever learned a song note-for-note.

It's not that I can't, I just choose not to do so. If I wanted to hear (for example) ZZ Top's "LaGrange", I have at least twelve different recorded versions* of that song done by the Boyzz themselves I can listen to...I don't need to try to play what has already been played.

BTW, they don't play it just as it was recorded every time, either.

I get very bored very quickly when a person plays a song or songs perfectly, note-for-note, as written or recorded.

So when I learn another person's song (famous or not), I learn the basic structure (chord progressions, rhythm, "feel" of the song) and then go off on my little tangents. Generally, the audience either (1) doesn't realize it's any different, because they're not musicians or (2) don't care, because it sounds good and real and I can put real emotion into it, instead of worrying that "Oh, no, that's not how __________ played that lick!"

*I've got a lot of bootlegged ZZ Top stuff

That means you are 'nailing' it. You've got the essence down. That's when you've arrived as a guitarist.

"I Love You" as performed by Barney: I nailed this one so perfectly that whenever someone hears me play it, they automatically presume that I was the one who wrote it! 8)

You sir should be hung upside down and fed Exlax... Oh you didn't write that? never mind...

I too am a big Allman Brothers fan and I enjoy attempting my interpretation of Dickie Betts on "Jessica" from the "Best of". However I don't think he ever played the solo the same twice on that song.

   The irony of that statement is that I'm hoping to hear from Fedex today to schedule a job interview. Please don't let this forum post slip into the wrong hands.

Gotta be Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad...Nope can't do both the Duane and Eric lead parts...parts of both, but drives me crazy trying to get most of both parts...but I just love playing the rhythm to that one...A vintage reissue strat and a champ amp cranked right up and just love the rhythm playing on the song! I am almost always the lead guitarist in the bands I have played in, but sometimes I just love playing the rhythm and that is my favorite one to nail.
