Hey guys, I need some help finding some Big Dipper Pickups, like the ones in the John Mayer Strat. I'm building my own strat and I really want those pickups because of their boosted mids. The problem, is that I can't even find them on Guitar Center or Musician's Friend. The only one I've found is on Ebay, and I can't spend $600 on a loaded pickguard.

If Fender doesn't sell these separately, what is a good set of PU's that get that boosted mid/SRV type sound, excluding Texas Specials.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it!

Why are you excluding the Texas Specials?

The Fender Custom Shop does not sell the Big Dippers aftermarket. That's exactly why they command such a high price on eBay. The closest I've heard personally are the S-5's made by Klein http://www.kleinpickups.com/p-77-s-5-scooped-mid-range-stratocaster-pickups.aspx

On another note, I think your confusing two different pickup flavors. The Texas Specials do have a boosted mid-range; however, the Big Dippers are scooped out mids -- hence the name.

That's a good post.

Kingman 44, if a mid-boosted sound is what you want then Big Dippers are exactly the way NOT to go - even if you can find some.

Cheers - C

Klein pickups are looking very attractive to me at this point, and I like trying different pups, they have some very good examples on their site...give their sound clips a listen.
