I don't really believe the Unions have anything to do with this. All these problems didn't come from this administration. You need to go back decades.

Just how much TARP money do you think went into the UAW pension fund to help keep GM afloat long enough for them to be nationalized and become "Government Motors"? Perhaps you've heard of "SEIU"?

I'll give you the Cliff Notes version of a recap......they got billions. All from the pockets of this nation's taxpayers.

The Unions have alot to do with debpt problems of most stats and local gov. Unions have no place in Government. We as tax payers do not have the opertunity to nagotiate but we have to pay the bill.

Supro your right all of the problems didn,t all come from this admin but 4 trillion dollares is 3 yrs does,nt help and no signs of stopping. As not allowing a balanced budget amendment to even be brought up. Now they agree to let there be a vote on it it the sen which we all know it will not pass. And even if it did the pres said he would veto.

Hey, I'm not making excuses for any of it. Arjay, I'm not sure how much money went directly to the UAW itself. GM Corporation was bailed out as a whole as was just about the whole U.S. auto industry. When the CEO's show up to Washington D.C. in private jets crying for a handout, I have a hard time blaming the union. The company and its corporate structure is just as much the blame. S

I agree 1,000% about Government Motors. I would have let them fail. Same with the banks. When my photography business is slow, I don't receive a government. I can't lay myself off and collect unemployment. Other automobile manufacturers have failed in the past and the world didn't come to an end.

The bigger problem is how many Americans are willing to give up the existing government programs, pensions and cheap healthcare. I don't see anyone willing to give up single thing on a state or federal level.
Some of the largest and most powerful unions in the country are the teachers, and state and federal workers not manufacturing. We do little manufacturing anymore and many shops in my area as well as in the south are non-union shops. Some are good, some not so good.

The breakdown was like this after the restructuring. I don't know what it is now. The auto industry was mismanaged for ages. It's always easier to blame the labor than the management. (Can you tell I was union worker? ) Who gave the workers all the bennies to start with?
GM is or was I'm not even sure any more owned by: (Should be owned by the taxpayers, we paid for it.)

United States Department of the Treasury (61%)
United Auto Workers Union Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association (17.5%)
Canada Development Investment Corporation (7.9%)
Government of Ontario (3.8%)
Bond holders of Motors Liquidation Company (9.8%)

You can find a million different figures.

I was also a union worker at one time until the unions ran the co. out of Pa. and to a right to work state. Ever since then which was in the early 80,s unions can kiss my you know what. I use to use union workers with my co. and on avg. have to replace about half because they were useless on the job.

We never had that problem in our shop. Ours ran down south where they got cheap labor, poor quality control and more labor problems and less productivity than they had with the union. They even have to shut down the first week of hunting and fishing season.

They got a better deal tax wise in North Carolina. We never had a strike or any serious labor problems in the ten years I worked there and none of the union workers were lazy bums. We made transmission and engine parts for a famous German gear manufacturer and an American diesel engine manufacturer. I was even offered a job down there but family obligations kept me up here.

Obama will win the next election, I will put money on that. Not that I'm a supporter at all, I can just see it happening. I dont think the economy will fail either, money & debt is a made object, just like the american economy- it's not like it can't be controled :)
