.... and anything that would have a monsterous price tag on it would never have cost a grand new.

So the answer is no.

Nothing like those ridiculous figures but I have a couple items that I'm sure have appreciated. I bought a '62 RI new in '88 for about $650 that's still in mint condition with all the case candy that I would hazard a guess is worth upwards of $1500 or more. I have '54 Strat that I bought/restored about 10 years ago that is likely at least worth twice/thrice or more what I'm into it for. I also have a '64 Vibrolux Reverb that I bought in the mid '90s for $550 that ... well you know the routine.

I have a 57 Dano U1 that was found in the trash and I was offered $900 for it.
My 72 Strat has gone up in value. $280 new, I've seen them around three grand in some auctions. When you consider inflation, it really isn't that much. I might overhaul it next year. New frets, bridge and maybe a fancy trem block. I want to keep playing it, not have it for an investment. I'll finally get rid of those cast bridge pieces. The pups in this one are magic.
Don't know why, most CBS Strats are considered a POS by some folks. I like mine just fine. I actually have one with a tight neck pocket.

Back in 82', I purchased my first Fender. It was a Fender Stratocaster. Now, its called a Dan Smith Stratocaster. I paid $375 for it new at Guitar Center. Now, it is worth between $1800 to $2000. Unreal. Good thing I still have it.

My great aunt has a late 60s Jaguar that is still in impeccable condition, and a silver face Vibrolux. I'm not sure what she paid for the pair (and I think the guitar was used when she bought it) but I guarantee you those two pieces have appreciated quite a bit over the years. She was offered five grand for the two, but she'll never sell.

The '65 Strat that I paid $280 for in 1974 would be worth about $15,000 today if I hadn't made the mistake of getting it refinished in '76,now it's only worth about 40-50% of that. The '65 Jag that I paid $150 for in '77 is worth about $3,600 now and the '65 Mustang that was treated horribly to a poor refinishing but I resurrected with a Candy Apple Blue paint job is worth abut $1,200 now and I paid $150 for her in '77.That's not a bad return but it was a hard lesson to learn that "fixing up" a guitar is the worst thing you can do with regard to classics.I have several other guitars that I bought in the same time period for very little that are worth over 20 times of what I paid for them.
