Improv is really what I'd recommend, it'd help a beginner be able to play an actual solo instead of the same thing, note for note, that they read on a tab.

i always improvise in the pentatonic scales, its a great way to learn some techniques and get to know your way around the fretboard.

Neil Young solos in G major over an Em chord in "Down By The River".

There's a million. Solo from Maggie Mae, Honky Tonk Woman, etc.

However I always teach Pentatonic minor first...that way you can incorporate some basic scales patterns...for example E pentatonic in CCR's 'Suzie Q', Link Wray's 'Rumble', etc.)

but... it's hard to beat learning in A pentatonic....that way a beginner can transition from solo to easy rhythm patterns with no finger stretches.

First song I taught my nephews. 'Rumble' (E minor pent) ...they practiced their pentatonic scale without even knowing it. The chords are also dead easy and you even get to do some fun tremelo picking (use a thin pick).

thanks,

I would really recommend imrov but when students are learning its hard to impro when you have no basic technique or any clue how to form solos. I find that if you teach solos you get to know what the players thought process is and it's also fun for a student.

Some students are more natural improvising but more find it harder.

What about easy solos in minor pentatonic.
