Since I've had my back problems my sleep patterns are all over the place and a lot of times the pain keeps me awake all night or most of it.I could take a pile of prescription pain killers and get to sleep but that's a slippery path to get on so I have to grin and bear it until either the pain passes or I am so tired that I could sleep on a bag of crushed stone. The usual sleep inducers like warm milk, reading of listening to music don't work because of the nature of pain so I doomed to another sleepless night.Pain is a pain.

I hear you oh so well, thats why were up at this time of the night, I feel for ya and can tell ya this, ativan, they purscribe it to me and it does work but you feel like a stone in the morning, and I hate drugs, but at this point the pain is so bad and I feel like I,am ready to just crash any and everything in front of me, makes me moody as hell and I don,t like nothin, my fingers and hands are so sore from the hemochrometosis I want to scream, and playin my strat is a painfull endever, so I got to the point where I let others play it just so I can hear it being played. Hope you OK guit and the family is well and doin fine.

Bro I share your pain...have you ever tried melatonin? It has worked for me and I dont wake up feeling like a zombie. It beats taking the gnarly sleeping aids like ambien or Lunesta and all those heavy pain meds aids. Wifey thinks I'm nuts sometimes cause I am up at weird hours but that is what pain does to people. My sleeping patterns have changed too...I hate insomnia.Just last night my wife woke up at like 2:30 am and there I am playing the strat unplugged in the dark in the living room.We have a small house so I have no where to go and play late at night.Hope it works out for you bro.I usually read when that happens

I tried melatonin and it didn't do the trick and I don't want to get into taking any more meds so sleeping pills are out of the question even though my doctor recommended them for occassional use.Well I can see "the sun rise from the bottom of the sea"so I think I'll toddle off and try to catch a few winks at last.BTW the sun rises on the ocean right in front of our house-quite a brilliant sight as no 2 sunrises are alike.

Try herbal things, like valerian. My wife takes melatonin, seems to help too.

I'm an osteopath. May I suggest you try to find a place inside or outside your body where it feels more or less okay, and try to remain there? There are quite some techniques on how to focus to different body sensations. You can learn how to sneak around that pain, it helps a lot of people.

I suppose you doctor is a pro and knows how to cure your kind of pains? There is a lot of therapy possible to help you.

Good luck.

David

Hi guistlinger: oh man, I clicked on this thread to make a joke, but it's gone right out of my head after reading your post. Six years ago I had a herniated disc and I know all about that 24 hour a day gasping pain you can't even escape when you're asleep! You have so much sympathy coming at you from this direction.

All these years and mountains of hard work with the spine later I am 97 percent better - but just reading what you say brings it all back again in a cold sweat! I wish you the very best.

Cheers - C

Lucky for me the herniated disks only hurt when I am on my feet. I'm taking anti inflamitories and muscle relaxers. The muscle relaxers are only at night and I sleep like a teenager after a round horizontal mombo. I suspect they are somewhat similar to sleeping pills and plan on getting off them soon. Hope you get through this bout soon.

like nevin, i just don't sleep. my aches and pains are minor. my job keeps me awake. i'll wake up after a few hours and worry about the next day. have i recieved the correct material? do we have the right crew scheduled? has the job been confirmed and re-confirmed? just silly stuff like that keeps me awake.
i've slept like a baby since the weather here has been 100 degrees plus. but i would never recommend anyone work all day in this heat just to get a good nights sleep.
i hope you find something that works for you.

If you can talk with your Doc, guitslinger, pain being tired and not sleeping are too many things at once. The Doc can help. Is there a clinic nearby?

I signed on to joke around a little. sounds like anything but a time for jokes. I Don't know all your ages, but it seems like the older I get the more I hurt, and the harder a good night's sleep is to come buy. I suffer from chronic pain in my shoulders (Rotator Cup). Along with heart and lung problems bad kidneys and am recovering from a bout with prostate cancer. If thats not enough to cope with I have sleep apthia. The test showed that I wake up an average of 89 times an hour all night long. today a respiratory therapist came to the house and delivered a new machine that is supposed to help me sleep. It's a mask that fits my face and an air supply that forces air into my lungs, I've been trying it all day and I don't know whether I can wear it in bed. What a trip. I am beginning to realise the meaning of sick and old. :) :) I truly sympathise with all of you. :( . Keep your chins up and Rock On.
----Danny,
