depends on your level and also your means. personally i would save a little and get a little more into the mid range BUT that is only my opinion. not putting down the squier jazzmaster at all. Squires are good guitars

My advice to you: Guitarists are probably the worst financial consultants. Asking a guitarist whether or not to spend more money on better gear is like asking Ted Nugent whether or not you should invest in a more expensive firearm. That being said, go with the Squier. Practice now, worry about your dream rig later when you have disposable income or get a couple of sponsors due to your awe-inspiring licks.

If you're dead set on buying new get the squier, but if you're prepared to go used, then you could probably get a good mexican or japanese model for not a whole lot more money on ebay.

While you're looking at the Epi Dot, I would suggest looking at the Ibanez Artcore AS73. I bought one used and the thing plays amazingly well and I felt it was built better and sounded better than the Dot which I was originally going to get. It was originally going to be the beater guitar to take to lower rent gigs, but wound up being a go-to guitar. LOL

In this jaded opinion, the joy of a low price wears off, the joy of having something of quality does not.

Yeah, I agree, but the Ibanez Artcore series and some of the the Epi line provide a pretty big bang for the buck. Not everyone gigs or plays professionally. I still play professionally and use the Artcore as well as trash can found 57 Dano U1. I'd check out some of the Reverend line too. Great guitars. Properly set up, a middle of the road guitar can serve you well with a good amp.

I'm getting ready to build some Cigar Box Guitars. How cheap is that? It's not the name on the headstock that matters, it's how capable the hands are that use the guitar that matters more.
