This is yet another misinformed piece of information the news teams love to throw around. It's 21 years and if at the end they still pose threat then they can be kept in another 5 years. So you can serve a 26 year term.

Now I still don't think that is long enough in this case, however it annoys me that the news networks just throw around what are basically lies to the general public who rely on them for reliable information.

They have the option, that hasn't been used in Norway ever, to Charge him for crime against humanity with life as maximum sentence.

Glad to hear that you are unharmed Bluestube, and sorry for your loss.

Ah-ha. Since this thread has surfaced again I'd like to tell any Norwegians watching about a little piece Michael Morpurgo (the author) did on the BBC the other day. He reminded us that every year the Norwegians send the UK a huge Christmas tree which we put up in Trafalgar Square in the middle of London: it is the center of our seasonal celebrations. This is in enduring rememberance of the solidarity between our two nations during the Second World War.

And he suggested that now it would be fitting if we gave you a tree of ours to be planted on Utoya to show our friendship for you at this time.

Recent events in Norway have received very extensive coverage in Britain and I for one have been utterly impressed with the calm dignity with which everyone from politicians to ordinary people have conducted themselves through it all; most of all, those directly involved. I like Morpurgo's idea.

Here's what he said:

Cheers - C

I dident here the entire report, but one news agency was reporting that the campsite was a former Nazi Youth Camp. And that The Murderer may have thought he was killing Nazies or Muslims that were being trained as terrorists. Is it possible that there is any truth in this story :?: you know, it seems to me that it is always some misguided lunatic that actually thinks they are doing good. When someone begins to display this kind of thinking, they need to be stopped. Evan if they have to be executed. One life lost is by far better than Hundreds or potentially thousands. What a tragedy. :( and there talking of letting the guy out of jail in 26 years.

----Danny,

I heard that some American Right wing looney with his own radio show made that claim, but it is false.

I think that there hasn't been an execution in Scandinavia since Nazi symphathiser Vidkun Quisling was executed for treason, just after WW2. Today his name Quisling (Kvisling in Icelandic) stands for traitors in Scandinavia

I was going to give a better answer but Beck Ola explains it better.

Hi guys.

This is ulrikandthedominos, I posted occasionally here a few years ago but I'm not very good at following online communities and I've been so busy working on my bachelor degree that I eventually dropped out of here completely. Used to be the "other" Norwegian guy. Anyway, I just wanted to clarify one thing about the Norwegian legal system for future posters.

Our maximum single prison sentence is 21 years. As Snowjoe pointed out we have a system that allows the courts to review the sentence once it has been served and should they deem it necessary, extend the sentence by five years. This can in theory be done indefinitely, effectively creating a "life" sentence that is reviewed every five years. The extended sentence is only used on criminals that are considered a threat to society even after their completed sentence. I am fairly certain Breivik will be the first convict to serve an "actual" life sentence in Norwegian judicial history.

Furthermore, in case there's any confusion around this matter, AUF (the youth organization targeted by Breivik) is a democratic organization for young people who wish to engage in local and national politics, and is a sub-organization of the Norwegian Labour party. All the other major Norwegian political parties have similar organizations for youths who frequently engage in debates and help raise participation and awareness around elections. In other words, not at all like Hitler-jugend. Not a particularly classy comparison, Mr. Glenn Beck

As for me my family is safe, though sadly I've lost two wonderful, intelligent fellow students.

Thanks for all the prayers and support, it means a lot to us up here.

Ulrik.

EDIT: Ceri already explained the extended sentence.

:) Thanks for clearing up the story about the youth groups. That seems like a good way to get kids interested in the political system. Americans should take notes, and fallow suit with something similar. Then maby, we wouldn't have so many numbchucks on the loose spouting nonsense. :)

WHAT???!!!

Where on earth does something like that come from? Tell me this "news agency" is actually a drunken hobo down by the railroad track?

Good grief, not even Rupert Murdoch would broadcast something as plain stupid and malicious as that...

Ditto!! Not a very good student of history there. The Norweigian track record with respect to the Nazi's in the 20th century is clear. My mother-in-law'[ who was a prisoner in Auschewitz-Birkenau] has a cousin, Herman Kahn, [a childhood friend of Elie Weisel, both of whom were transported to the death camps at the same time], who emigrated to Norway after liberation, instead of turning to the US, because he learned his sister was there. Herman eventually wrote a book about his life entitled "Fire and Light". Herman's father was brother to my mother-in-law's father. None of her immediate family survived. Those interested might enjoy researching further.
