i do think it is a shame that she has died but she knew the risks in what she did. being a drug addict and alcoholic is never going to end well and it isn't like she wasn't offered any help. I think people should give more thought to the 92 young people who were murdered in Norway for no reason.

I agree that its a shame but she knew the risks in what she did and considering the tragedies in Norway i think Amy's death is nothing compared to what they are going through

A massive talent.

Never rated her (based on her singles at least) until I checked out some Youtube stuff of her singing some jazz classics. About turn - re-review - face palm - what was I thinking..

Her story it seems, is not unlike Billy Holliday's was. (Look it up if you don't know it..) How ironic that she should go the same way, given her uncanny similarity to that artiist.

I'm not going to speculate on her vulnerabilities, her habits, the pressures and so on, but I do believe it was the pressure of expectations that probably took her down the dark path she followed. I recall watching her on a comedy game show (Never Mind the Buzzcocks) a year or so ago, when she was absolutely slaughtered and the whole thing was just seen as a big hoot.. "Here's Stoner Amy killing herself for all our enterainment.." Shame on the BBC, for not finding some kindly broadcaster with an ounce of decency and the courage to gently escort her out of the studio for her own sake.

But in the end she only had to justify herself to Amy Winehouse. Despite the provocations she ultimately had the option to walk away from it all and decide for herself what and who she wanted to be. Maybe what finally happened was what she wanted.

Here's a truism of many artists - The light that burns twice as bright, burns half as long..

Is this the list of people who have been dead for over 27 years?

No, it's a list of those who died at 27 years of age. Much has been written about music stars that seem to die at 27.

Maybe not. I don't feel that she justified herself, to herself. She self-destructed and, in the process, threw the baby out with the bath water.

Yes, I know that.
My point was most of these folks have been dead for that long or longer:
Johnson - August 16, 1938
Jones - July 3, 1969
Wilson - September 3, 1970
Hendrix - September 18, 1970
Joplin - October 4, 1970
Morrison - July 3, 1971
McKernan - March 8, 1973
Ham - April 24, 1975
Thain - December 8, 1975
Cobain - April 5, 1994

With the exception of Cobain and Winehouse, all the others have been dead over 30 years! Lots of other artists have lived since then and grown older. Or died younger from substance abuse or suicide or murder or accident. Seems pointless to look for some kind of meaning in this.

More like irony.

Anyway her family is sending her off without any fanfare so at least the poor girl's funeral won't be a media event for the gossip rags and paparazzi to go frantic over. They are just having a private family service. At least now her tortured soul will finally find peace.

That's correct Doc, yes, she did appear to self destruct and especially, over the last year or so, it's as if she was in some downward spiral that she could not pull out of.
Some self analysis, if at all possible from this individual at this time, was crucial, if not, then her management, family and closest friends had to take control of the situation.
Another of our young bright lights ' Robbie Williams ' appeared to be going down exactly the same path, it wasn't looking too good for him either. But 'someone', whether it was himself, probably not. But 'someone', recognised the seriousness of the situation and stepped in and pulled him over and during the last few years, he has turned his life around.
He is now back to singing with his group 'Take That'. I don't know if his solo career has permanently ended but I, for one am leaning towards ' hoping so ' because that is where his particular demons seem to be lying, ready for the attack.
The attack that was eating into Amy Winehouse.
I liked that other post because of the genuine feeling of gentleness and compassion that was displayed in it's content and as the poster illustrated, not many, even in the media of television were not capable of seeing and in accordance, not acting in a proper and decent manner.
Amy Winehouse!? Did she justify herself, to herself? Well maybe she didn't because maybe she couldn't and her desperation of this, as an artist, must have been the most intense feelings of pain and anguish.
So, where was that 'someone' she desperately needed? Who? or What? is left to justify?
