Most people want or "need" a new guitar, nothing more exciting than holding a beautiful shiny Strat :) but if it was me I'd go for an amp, as long as you're comfortable playing your existing guitar and it doesn't give you any headaches... having both, the right guitar and amp is the best option of course, but if your budget is limited and you feel that the amp is holding you back then the way to take care of that is the right amp IMO.

When I plug in to my amps and get that sweet tone it makes playing very enjoyable and I just want to keep playing! I can't say the same thing about a crappy sounding amp... it's also important that the guitar feels good in my hands and is a joy to play, so if you're already happy with the way your feels then the amp should be your next purchase.

When I was faced with the same decision many years ago I opted for the guitar first-a used '65 Strat-my rationelle at the time was good amps are easy to find and are plentiful whereas not every guitar is going to be up your alley and if a particularly good guitar comes along it may be ages before you come upon another one of the same caliber. Another thing is that a great guitar will be even more incentive to play regardless of the amp and also the set up on a quality guitar is generally much better hence it would be easier to play.

OK so right now I'm just running with the Squier Affinity Strat and Frontman 15g starter pack. Now I'll be honest like I said when I got it I was very impressed. But at the same time I will of course be now saving to buy new better gear! However with my job disposable income is at minimum and I can only save for one piece at a time!

So the opinions I'm trying to get here, is in you guys views, would you rather first play the Squier into a better amp or a better guitar into the 15g.

Personally I feel like the sensible option would be to go with a better amp first, but new guitars are just so shiney

But I know there is a lot of sensible knowledge on the boards so just trying to see what you guys think!

Cheers.

Joe, I like the Affinty because it will scream. 8s, Extra Slinky Nickel Wound .008 - .038. If you have GAS invest in a pedal. Dial in.

Amp it.

Nothing worse than being in a band with a 15w amp.. it's like trying to get your point across to women sometimes.. you just can't be heard. :D

Seriously, your guitar will sound better through a nice amp!! :) maybe some new pickups if you can't spring for a new guitar in a hurry, just to breathe new life into your guitar!! :D

I say guitar also. You may feel like the Squier is comfortable, but having played an affinity, I believe you will be pleasantly surprised at the amount of difference a better guitar will make in your playing.

Voodoo Blues said it well.

Your tone starts in your fingers anyhow.

If you've improved enough for a more serious investment, get an uprade Strat.

Amp will make all the difference in the sound as long as it's a clear upgrade in amp.
You'll see. Actually, "you'll hear".

Thanks for all the opinions people! I see there are clear pros on both sides of the thinking, so obviously I think the best course of action would be to try a new guitar in my current amp and my current guitar in a new amp and see what works best for me.

Thanks!

Sort of same position I was in, upgrade your guitar parts (I suggest a new bridge and middle pickup, maybe some new locking tuners, you can change the bridge, etc.) and it be just as good as a Fender, but an amp is what you need, id suggest saving and getting a slightly used Hot Rod Deluxe off of ebay, just as good as a used one from gc, but uo to $50 cheaper.

Get a better amp. I've heard iPad sound better than the 15G. Take YOUR guitar to the music store and try it out in some better amps. You'll be amazed at how good your guitar will sound through a nice amp.

Good call...Best thing will certainly be to weigh both options, and decide from there which you think will be the best bang for your buck.
