His choral composition? I'm sorry, but you misinterpreted what I said. I'm assuming you know the tale behind it.

I don't want to perpetuate a pedantic argument which wouldn't (at least in the most ideal of situations) impact any one of us the next morning, therefore:

Man made sound first, then learned how to write, then wrote sound.

Good night.

So correct me if I'm wrong but Jones.Ayyy believes that music book are useless or a bad idea because they tell you EXACTLY what to do and offers you no room at all to improvise or add your own twist. Am I on the semi-right path?

If so then I ask you this: When you play a song over and over again what do you start to do? If you are anything like me then you start to mix it up a bit and start adding your own style to it. To me music book are merely a reference that are meant to be interpreted in your own eyes and style.

Well we are all entitled to our own opinion and that is simply mind and I respect yours.

Actually, close, but not quite. As man evolved, so did his/her music and with that, the methods of letting others reproduce the music. What I'm saying is, we've learned to use the book. Some even so more than our ears, the book being now a crutch for those people. Oftentimes in jazz pieces, a fake book is what could get me through a night, but that still doesn't mean I don't go beyond the comps stated in the books, or in the soli/solo sections where a pre-made solo section is composed. More often than not, I say to hell with it and ad lib for a bit

Well, there's my view of it, and as for music books, I'd have to say Jazz for the Young Stage Ensemble would take it!

Blue Rain is one of the pieces in that assortment, and for years it's been a go to piece for me.
