+1 on The Germs.... f***ing Patt Smear had to go join Nirvana and Foo Fighters

i can cope with him joining nirvana....foo fighters though  he went from almost hardcore punk to a bloody power pop band

Timeline of Patt Smear:

Pioneer of hardcore punk ----------> Rhythm guitarist in hyper distorted punk band -> Pioneer of butt rock

The Stax Studio musicians including Booker T and the MG's....not for their own recordings...but for the music they played on all those Stax/Volt records on which all you saw was the artist's name or the vocal group name. Especially the Otis Redding sessions. Mr. Redding's "Try A Little Tenderness" is one of the greatest R&B recordings ever made even without his stellar vocal.

1. Rush .... still dismissed by too many

2. Hawkwind .... influenced so many types of music over the last 42 years (from techno, heavy metal, progressive rock and even PUNK) and even today inspires my son to play (I'm such a bad Dad).

3. Sex Pistols .... gave music the kick up the arse it needed 35 years ago. We need a group to throw caution to the wind and make music interesting again

4. The Yardbirds .... just because.

5. Buddy Holly & The Crickets .... without BH there would never have been The Beatles.

Rush... :?: A couple of decades and multiple tours of sold out arena's. Underrated they're not.

Hawkwind.. I agree as well as the Yardbirds, though they were more a result of internal conflict than actual audience dismissal. Difficult to keep the lid on when the roster is pretty much a who's who of rock/RB innovators.

Sex Pistols...If anything they were overrated, if it wasn't for the self mutilation and the debauchery, the so called music was just noise.

I would list " The Clash " well and far ahead of the Sex Pistols.

No Beatles without Buddy Holly.. :?: BH was not the only one in this era, there was a full roster , of other bands pushing the boundaries.
The Beatles would have happened regardless, It's next to impossible to say this band or that band would or would not have existed because of this other band.
Evolution ( for lack of a better term ) in music is resulting from multiple factors not just one.

Goody a debate...in the case for my defense/2 cents worth

I agree that Rush have been successful but are they by any stretch of the imagination mainstream? Are they Rock And Roll Hall of Fame inductees? Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (who?) are inductees of the Hall of Fame, but Rush have out sold them 2 or 3 times to 1 over the years. The mainstream media, eg. Rolling Stone magazine dismisses the band it's fans as Trekkies.

I am a fully paid up member of Rush Anonymous "My name is WretchedDogZDadd and I am Rush fan"

I was 19 a fan of Pink Floyd, Genesis Yes and even (gawd 'elp me) ELP...when the Sex Pistols came along.... IMHO, Zeppelin was spent, Queen was about as exciting as it got, music (remember prog rock) was disappearing up it's own $@!. You quite rightly dismissed their music but the Pistols brought a seismic change in music, that gave us the Punk scene (for a summer) and brought about the British heavy metal scene of the early 80s .... which resulted in Hair Bands .... frack it I've changed my mind about the Pistols, I'll concede that argument.

Mr. John Winston Ono Lennon, OBE, credited Mr. Elvis Aaron Presley for The Beatles but IMHO I hear more BH than Elvis in the early Beatles catalog....obviously The Crickets had no influence in the choice of The Beatles as a band name.

By no means did the Sex Pistols invent punk. They were also one of if not the most mainstream and commercial punk band of all time.

Terry Kath. His guitar playing on the early 70s era Chicago stuff is great.

More recently I think Fountains of Wayne are terrific. They have great songwriting and aren't afraid to let their influences show. Plus they have a cool sense of humor.
Their CD Welcome Interstate Managers is an all time fav.
