More underrated folks I thought of:

Charlie Sexton: From singing to songwriting to guitar playing to producing to band leading to recording to touring, this guy rocks at everything he does. Plus, Lady Armadillo thinks he's cute (although he looks nothing like me). :?

Joe Ely: Rarely known outside of Texas and/or the singer-songwriter community at large, and that's a sin...plus, he's had some of the best guitarists around in his band.

Derek O'Brien: Greatest unknown blues guitarist ever. Dang good bandleader and producer, too. He keeps the flame alive at Antone's.

David Grissom: guitarist--Joe Ely, Storyville, Dixie Chicks, John Mellencamp, solo stuff...producer, songwriter, band leader...why isn't his a household name?

Ian Moore: guitarist--solo, Joe Ely, a dozen other bands, great singer, good songwriter...

David Lee Holt: guitarist--Storyville, Joe Ely, solo...singer, guitarist, songwriter...

Malford Milligan: this man's got more soul than Sam Cooke and one of the best voices ever. Good songwriter. Greatest Albino African-American singer from Houston, Texas ever.

Sid Rutter: Drummer, singer, songwriter, guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, producer, engineer and peacekeeper in the Screamin' Armadillos.

cry of love, straight up retro rock and roll, but check out their album `brother`. It is wonderful, kinda like what i always wanted the black crowes to sound like, (i was always a little disapointed with the crowes). Their guitarist audley freed was a strat player i believe, and his tone was awesome.

Also, Raging Slab. Dont let the name fool you, they rocked. Full on hillbilly heavy rock with loads of great slide guitar. Ive only got the one album but am always amazed nobody else seems to have even heard of them. Shame.

Dust,

Many Bands have stayed under the radar yet were able to blow the top headliner's off the stage simply on musical capabilities.

Children Collide

The Faith.... overshadowed both by Minor Threat (Ian MacKaye's younger brother is the vocalist for The Faith) and by Void's side of the split record.

Teen Idles are IMO one of the best DC hardcore bands but they are often either forgotten only remembered as "the band Ian MacKaye was in before Minor Threat".

Rapeman is basically buried due to the fact that Albini was in Big Black before and Shellac after.

Louis Prima, Keeley Smith, Sam Butera and the Witnesses the true forerunners of rock and roll IMHO

Bill Haley and his Comets
Little Richard Wayne Penniman
Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels
The Animals
The Young Rascals
The Spencer Davis Group
Canned Heat (Alan Wilson era an under appreciated blues guitarist/singer/songwriter IMHO)
Classics IV
Savoy Brown (Chris Youlden era an under appreciated singer IMHO)
Atomic Rooster (Chris Farlowe era an under appreciated singer IMHO)
Argent
Thin Lizzy
.....impossible to list all, not even through the 70s and so many left out.....

Elton John, a lot of people should remember that behind his overtly flamboyant queen personality lies a genius behind some of the greatest songs that have ever been written.
