We have the "Over-rated Bands/Guitarists" thread, so why don't we do something positive and mention bands or guitarists we like who are under-appreciated.

This can be a guy/girl/band who's underappreciated in either the musician community or the general public.

Here's some of mine:
Prince--that little dude can rock on a dozen instruments, including guitar...and he knows how to put a band together.

Steve Wariner--great guitarist, but unfortunately, he's only known for his string of country hits from the 80s.

Vince Gill--ditto, except change the date to the 90s and add Amy Grant. I mean, he was in Pure Prairie League..."Falllin' In and Out Of Love With You"

Andy Fairweather-Low--on this side of the pond, nobody knows who he is. That's a shame.

Leon Russell--Not a guitarist, but that freaky old man put on one of the best shows I ever saw (pre-brain surgery, I haven't seen him since he had that problem). Without a doubt, that was the tightest band in the world.

Tab Benoit--go see him, no matter what the cost or how inconvenient it may be. If you don't like him afterwards, you need a soul transplant.

Brewer Philips--He played half the leads with Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers...and he was freakin' awesome.

Buddy Whittington--If he didn't look like a plumber, he would be a legend on par with SRV, Jimmie Vaughan and Billy Gibbons.

Floyd Cramer--another non-guitarist, he is (unfortunately) forgotten, but that guy's piano can bring a tear to your eye.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds after Jimmie Vaughan--there's been a string of guitarists in that band since the Originator left, and all of them were good-to-great-to-awesome.

Malcolm Young--Yes, he just stands there wearing a tank shirt, backing up his brother...but he originated and plays many of those riffs we all instantly identify as AD/DC.

So, what you got?

Blind Melon - Everyone thinks that they are a one hit wonder but the way the 2 guitarists weave their parts together is incredible!

I'll go with Robin Trower. People have paid little attention to him since his Bridge of Sighs album (1974).

Always thought Gary Moore was underappreciated. I didn't see many tributes to him when he died suddenly last Feb.

I like this much better... the other thread just opens doors to dumping on bands people cherish.

As for me:

The Outfield - Not the most technically savvy band, nor the most illustrious career, but WOW what a debut album. Plus, the engineering on that album is fantastic. William Whitman really did a bang up job getting such a full sound and great tone out of three guys with minimal gear. If you are not familiar with Play Deep, give it a listen.

I'm sure i can think of plenty more, I'd say Maiden but I don't think they are really that underrated judging by the sell out crowds. I just love those guys though. I think the world should love them too LOL

I just thought of another. Josh Clayton Felt of the band School of Fish. I saw that guy open for Tori Amos... Yes i've been to a Tori Amos concert but i promise i was not wearing fairy wings. I was blown away by what he was doing all by himself on stage. Another example of a not so technical virtuoso but just enjoyed his music. Catchy tunes. I went and bought the "inarticulate nature boy" album the very next day and i still love that record. He played most of the instruments himself and i believe engineered it too. Sadly, he passed away at the age of 30.... RIP Mr. Felt.

Alter Bridge - IMO some of the best straight up, modern rock n roll ever recorded (especially the blackbird album)

Karnivool - HUGE in Australia. Think Incubus meets Tool. Amazing band, really nice guys in person.

This track though, hands down my favorite. crazy tuning. B F3 B G B E (half drop b, half e standard)

First one that comes to my mind is Kings X. Those guys put out some kick $@! music and 9 people out of 10 have never heard their tunes.

Flight is severely underrated, hopefully they (he?) keep releasing music and get the success they deserve

Big Business is rather underrated, and a bit overshadowed by the fact that they make up half of the Melvins.

Meat Puppets would be if they hadn't turned into a bad pop rock/generic 90s college radio band.

I hope Bass Drum Of Death can get the success they deserve.

MellowHype is overshadowed by Tyler and Earl.

+1 on Malcolm
