You may have them, you might be one. I just moved into a brand new home in a new area of town because financially I couldn't keep the home I had. The house next door was up for sale at the time we purchased, so its a crap shoot as to who is going to move in. When the neighbors moved in, they are two 22 year old men. I am 37 with a growing family. I have a 1 year old and another on the way. Since they have moved in, they have had alot of friends over (anytime during the week), not crazy wild parties, but they all like to smoke, which takes them outside. They favor the back, which is near to my one year olds room. After a few drinks, the volume of their voices tend to increase. Because both houses are two stories, the sound bounces all the way up and it is very loud in my son's room, with the windows closed. I have already politley spoken to them about keeping it down when they are outside, but it keeps happening. They say sorry and are quiet for a bit but then it happens again. I am trying to be a good neighbor and I understand it's their house, but when they wake my son up, he wakes me up and the whole house gets no sleep. My wife is going crazy and thinks we made a big mistake moving there.
Any advice on what you have done with your neighbors?

When I moved into my first home, I was 21 years old and I worked nights.

The man next door chose the week I moved in to develop a chainsaw fetish. The first two days, I put in earplugs (didn't work) and tried to be cool. Finally, I respectfully went over to meet him (for the second time) and explained the problem. He apologized and waited until my days off to finish his tree-trimming projects. We got along swimmingly from that point forward.

A few years later, I had horrible neighbors move in on the other side. They would wake me up at all hours of the day (my nighttime), for everything from "Our ball went into your back yard" to "Can I borrow some milk?" as well as loud music all afternoon long.

I told them several times that I sleep during the day, and even posted a note on the door reminding them. It didn't stop, so I waited until my next days off and went over to their house at three in the morning to borrow some butter (first day) and scotch tape (second day).
Each time I would say, "Oh, I'm sorry i woke you up--I don't sleep at night!" (Similar to what they said when they woke me up).

Just for a little bit more fun, I had three all-night jams with some friends (who also worked nights) and we cranked every amp to the max from midnight to five--all amps aimed at the wall that faced their house (although there was twenty feet or more between our brick homes, my den/jam room was closest to their bedroom).

Somehow, they got the point and left me alone during the day after that.

Too funny!,
I think they are all asleep when I get up at 6:30am, so this morning I thought I should break out the acoustic for some heavy rhythm chords on the back step. Alas, I did not.

This exact same thing happened to me, and I ended up divorced. Exact same thing--neighbors blaring noise (loud music (full PA system DJed parties) and voices) all night into my then one year old's room. I blame the ex wife in the end for the divorce because "good times and bad..." but this was a major problem and caused stress because my wife got mad at ME for asking them to stop it and calling the cops re noise complaints. Sorry to hear about it.

Too bad she got mad at you (and divorced) for trying to quiet things down.

Well if you've had a pleasant word with them and they paid no heed, there must be a baby crying on youtube somewhere let them hear that for an hour or two, speakers nice and tight to the wall

My first thought is to always start a sound war and the second is the cops. I don't want to do either yet. I have to live next door to them so I would like to have a decent relationship.

It's always best to try to resolve in a civil manner but if all else fail pay back is a $@!&*. We play loud amps dont we? I think we all had to deal at some point with that problem, in a big crowded city it's such that it's best to just live with it. I for one dont even want to get to know my neighbors.

Dealt with it for long enough myself, partying all hours neighbours, folks you couldn't have a quiet word with who got kinda abusive, wind up merchants, so, once their party was over and rest was the order of the day for their hangover cure, out came the 100w nice and tight against the wall and let them shake rattle and roll, worked for me, they moved shortly afterwards and divorced I heard shortly after, I hope you can find a way to resolve it peacefully like you said you have to live next door, if they're approachable a last plea for a bit of consideration is about as far as I could take it, then the big boys come out

The MOTHER IN LAW is often used as a good deterant, I'm shivering right now at the thought. :)

We live in the burbs. Its about a 10 min drive on the highway to the city. If it keeps up with no respect, I will take down plate numbers and car descriptions and let the cops know there may be some drunk drivers on the road, as I frequntly see them leave with the remainder of their beverages. It should deter the friends who make the drive.

Timidity, and just a slight burning sensation throughout the respiratory system. Just make sure you're standing down wind when you toss that bad boy.

get a dog that barks real loud when the neighbors go outside. Maybe they'll find it annoying and decide they'd prefer to just hang inside rather than provoke the dog into barking.
