I bought a used Hot Rod Deluxe (not the three) for $300 locally, but the guy was really in need of money. I see them listed around here for anywhere from $400-$500. I'd say that $420 is a fair price...just make sure that it includes the cover and footswitch(which it does when you buy it new).

I love mine, by the way. Amazing tone and extremely loud. I've heard the gain channel is better in the III than in the older ones, which is good...because my gain channel is pretty sad. I just put pedals in front of the clean channel to get the dirt I want.

Be sure the owner transfers the warranty. All he need to do is sign the receipt over to you. I wouldn't buy any HRD series amp without a warranty.

i have also heard a lot of ppl having problems with them... the 2 most common problems are a broken ribbon cable and lose connections on the reverb tank (both of which are easily fixable) i got mine as a demo floor model... i make a point of buying floor models cuz i can test them and make sure everything works... ive had passt experiences with fender amps that the one new in the box never seems to work... its just my luck though... i love the deluxe, very versatile lil amp

Is it me, or the previous Hot Rod series amp before the Hot Rod III sounded better? I've loving my Blues Jr NOS with the older Hot Rod design.

Hi, what the heck is it with the reputation of the hot rod series amps anyway? I have read both rave reviews and terrible ones all over the place. I'm starting to doubt my purchase of one! Any opinions will be appreciated. :?

Mine's good, # 55 of the 125 Black and Tan Series made for Sam Ash.
Next amp will be a Blues Junior in tweed, I just passed up an HRD in tweed... Oh Well

The amp Quiver consists of....so far....

A 410 Custom Classic Magnatone 15 watts circa 62-63
A Champ 600 circa 2009
A HRD 40 watt. circa 2008

Of the three it's a palette of sounds that allows me to not use peripherals, pedals and other what nots.

The Magnatone is best for that " Get yar Ya Ya's Out " Stone's sound. Tha brown sound before Eddie VH..... Or just as good for that early Face's Ron Wood type of tone. " Cindy Incidentally "

Just like anything else. You either love em or hate em, some love Pizza, some hate Pizza, some like blonds, some hate blonds, some like blonds with brazilian waxed and some like blonds with....well you know where Im getting at.

It all boils down to personal preference and you need to try the hot rods out if you like them. I personally like the older hot rods over the newer hot rod IIIs.

I just got my Blues jr NOS in tweed and with Jensen speaker and loving it. The circut is not based on the newer hot rod III, which I like. You'll love it.

Thank You...Gas or more specifically Aas is approaching down the track..a..lack..
Guitars I have enough of for the time being, Two complete rebuilds which are about to undergo further modifications. (finish and inlay's) pups and hook ups are just dialed in and no need for change.
Ooops ..I take that back, i just stripped the black plastic tone knob to the neck and middle TBX pot. Will change to black metal knobs with detente screws.

Here's my take on it. If you play it around the house, your usually okay. If you gig with it on any serious basis like I tried to, it just doesn't hold up very well. My HRDlx failed three time on stage alone in less than 6 months. I'm not real hard on my gear either. I only bought it because I used Fender gear for over 40 years with barely ever a problem so I trusted it and I wanted something that was different. It wound up sitting in a closet in my music room because I didn't trust it until I finally sold it, and bought an Egnater Rebel 20. I never looked back. I used my 76 Twin until I sold the HRDlx.

The thing is I grew up during the time of Blackface and Silverface Fender amps. I have a good point of reference to what the actual "Fender Sound" really is. These new incarnations just aren't it. It has nothing to do with old vs. new because the amp I gig with now is one of the freshest ideas to come out on the market. It can sound more like Fender than some of the new Fenders. It's solid and sounds great. If all you've ever had a chance to play or afford is the HRD, VM or Mustang series you will surly think they are the greatest sounding thing on the planet. They're not. I would seriously save up for a DRRI either new or used it may very well be the last amp you buy for a very long time. It's not only the sound I have a problem with, I can usually get around that. Might not be happy about it, but reliability is of the utmost importance to me. I know about tubes and their issues. I always carry a spare set, but when components fry, that's another issue altogether.

Thanks a lot for your insightful response 63supro, it helps a lot. I take it you mean a deluxe reverb reissue by saying DRRI right? Right now, i'm looking at two used amps, one's a 65' reissue twin reverb, asking price of $900.00 in great condition, one year old. The other, is a fender 64 vibroverb custom reissue produced in 2004. It's the model that "amp doctor" cesar diaz collaberated with fender to create. The asking price is $1600.00, i got the guy down to $1500.00. I could use some good advice here, as this will be my one big amp purchase. Any opinions here would be gratefully received. I apologize for interupting this thread so much. I really appreciate your help! :D

Both fine amps. If you can make do with 40 watts, the Vibroverb would be interesting though I'm not too sure about the hot rod thing. I know Diaz passed away around 2002, and that's what makes me nervous. I don't know if Fender "improved" his design or not. I gigged with a 100 watt 76 SF Twin so I'm a little biased. Twins are really rock solid great sounding amps. You would really need to see which one suits your needs.

I Have a Hotrod Deluxe and love the tone of it, But the overdrive leaves a little to be desired. Just put a tube screamer on the clean channel and your good to go. But then again im not a very good player either :/
