The whole reason that Jimi is more influential than Knopfler is because he is a better guitarist.I'd be the last one to dis Knopler but everything that he does has been done before probably not all in the same package as Knopler does but none of its new. Jimi came out with sounds and techniques that were never dreamed of and took everything that had been done with a guitar and modified it to the Nth degree and put his own stamp on it.Granted Knopler is great but Jimi is out in the Stratosphere compared to him.

When Jimi first jammed with Cream he did "Killin' Floor",Clapton said he had always wanted to do it but couldn't,said he didn't have the chops...he then said "From that point on I just stood back and watched"....Clapton and Knopfler never even came close.

How is Knopfler better than Hendrix, in what way?

Back to reality.

You young folks have no idea what Jimi did. I got my first Stratocaster in 1971...no books...no You tube...no info on amps, pedals....nothing. We turned on fuzzy AM radio and just tried to wing it. "You have to tune the guitar?"...'Is there an order to the strings?'.

I have no idea how Jimi did what he did. From a poor black kid to guitar genius winging it on his own until he was a name. At least 'we' had 'him' to copy.

Knopfler is also great. He, however, wanted to be the guys he heard like Jimi, etc. He had drive and stickum. A thirst to be the best.

I'd call Jimi 'God' and Knopfler 'Son of God'
