They say Stevie used to chain as many as 16 amps together in the recording studio of various sizes and models. Possibly one of the reasons everybody wants his tone and can't seem to get very close. (That and they don't have his hands.) I've run as many as four amps together at once and it's definitely got some dynamic to it if you can handle the SPLs. The system you are employing always seems to work best to my ears though. Two amps, one clean and wet with verbs and the other dry and crunchy as all get out.

Holy Crap! 16 amps! I don't think I've had 16 amps over the whole time I've been playing.

SRV has been known to write the Lords Prayer on the head of a pin! There's a lot of legend about this guy. It gets better every year.

 Such is the world of music lore I suppose. No telling what the true number might be, but now I want to hook up 16 different amps and see how that sounds. I might want to stand down the street when I try it though...lol.

Ha! The lore of SRV does tend to grow doesn't it. These days you'd think his hands were so big that they drug the floor and he could squeeze a steel bar in two with only his wrists! (No one get too excited, I'm an SRV lover and I know he had extraordinary capability and hand strength.)

With regards to the amps; however, there is some credibility to the statement. Check out this link where Cesar Diaz talks about chaining 32 amps for the recording of "In Step."

I'm a low tech guy. No desire to do it rather than for fun

I use some Multi Effects pedals. I have 3 of them. they have two outlets...mono and stereo...hook up another multi effects pedal...another...split the last one to to two amps....keep the insanity going with foot switches for amp channels and effects. Between the MFX units, the amp, and switching channels...a million permutations .

All controlled by using the bypass on the pedals and amp foot switches .

The result....crazy experimentation. I can create some neat stuff but usually no idea how I got it. I don't really care.

When playing out I always use just one amp.

That was quite the interesting article. Thanks for sharing that. Ceasr Diaz was apparently quite long-winded.

Doesn't seem like he had a self esteem problem either does it! :)

Yeah doesn't seem like. I can't judge though, he seems to know what he's talking about. Some interesting ideas in that article.
