i've been around strats during my whole guitar "journey" if i may call it that... consequently i have never tried out humbuckers something important for the music i play (mostly punk rock and grunge)... i could install a humbucker on a strat (which would make this guitar my comfort zone... all the squier fat strats don't attract me visually that much) but i also think i should have a look at other guitars... i've been GASing an epiphone g-400 in worn brown for a while now, and a friend of mine has one in ebony i only hate the heavy neck but it's an awesome guitar... but i've also been loving the jagmaster (these definately need new colours) and the firebird studio

what should i do?

I own a G400 and I think that its humbuckers are kind of weak and you might be a little disappointed (YMMV). If you can, try out some others like maybe an Epiphone LP or some of the Deans, ESP, or Ibanez. Take your time and get one that really suits you and is fun to play...

I have an Epi G 400 Custom-antique white,3 pups, gold plating, besides looking impressive it also sounds impressive.Plugged into my Marshall stack she can scream like a demented banshee yet through my Blues Jr. she can produce the sweetest blues tones and mellowist jazz tones that you've ever heard.MY daughter's boyfriend prefers it to his Gibson SG in every way.I also have an Epi Firebird V Custom Shop sunburst model and it sounds just like a mid 60s SG.The necks on both are wider and a bit more chunky than a Strat or Tele neck but aren't uncomfortable to play. For the money you'd hardly find a better humbucker equipped guitar than these and the Epi Les Pauls.
