i've been around strats during my whole guitar "journey" if i may call it that... consequently i have never tried out humbuckers something important for the music i play (mostly punk rock and grunge)... i could install a humbucker on a strat (which would make this guitar my comfort zone... all the squier fat strats don't attract me visually that much) but i also think i should have a look at other guitars... i've been GASing an epiphone g-400 in worn brown for a while now, and a friend of mine has one in ebony i only hate the heavy neck but it's an awesome guitar... but i've also been loving the jagmaster (these definately need new colours) and the firebird studio

what should i do?

fender do a variety of humbucking guitars- 72 teles, jim root strat, blacktop, others I cannot remember. If, like me, you prefer the feel of a fender to gibson style, then there is a lot to chose from.

Or, like you said install a humbucker on a strat.

I hear nothing but good things about blacktops, also the pawnshop mustang is lots of fun.

I felt the exact same way and recently purchased a blacktop jazzmaster. The Blacktops are much nicer than you think.I scored it brand new for $375.00 with a coupon. I plan on upgrading the pickups maybe to some Novaks and than I will have a nice little jazzmaster at a descent price.Go play one and you will see that for the price they are not bad guitars.I too was looking for something other than a strat but wanted to stay with Fender.Good luck bro

the funny part is i'm a strat freak... i go crazy looking at strats especially a modded one... it's the most visually appealing to me... i'm a complete fender lover i've tried epiphone les pauls and hate them in everything except sound the firebird is one of my fave guitar shapes and maybe the only gibson (or gibson related) guitar i will ever buy though the g-400 give me GAS but only cause of the finish... i guess i could go with my original strat project but i don't know i'm pretty far from the price...

blacktop. epiphone SG is a great first humbucker gee-tar but once you start to like em you want another one, cause 1/3 of guitarist have one.

Hey Ralf, I ain't been around for a couple of months so bear with me if I mention anything others may have mentioned...... :?

I think you need to decide for sure what you are after...........are you wanting your strat with an HB or a guitar that is designed for HBs........given that you are still saving towards your modded strat.

If you want the full humbucking sound you will need to get a twin humbucker guitar, in my opinion. I would suggest getting a really cheap job off ebay, check out Gear 4 music's store there or something similar and you'll get an SG or LP style guitar for less than £50 and then drop in something like Iron Gear pickups. A british company that sell cheap pickups that sound amazing for their price. That way you will have a semi-decent 'different from strat' guitar for approx £100 and a little bit of time..........

Worth thinking about when you are on budget.................

edit due to my inability to spell properly.................

i might suggest you check out a Jaguar HH special. I have one for a few years and can't say enough good about it. It has humbucker pickups and really sounds and plays beautifully.

pappawookie long time no see ;) you know what? you're right i need to decide what i want... i forgot what i wanted my next guitar to be... i wanted that punk rock sound with a stratocaster feel but since then i started thinking to myself i dedicated my life to the strat maybe i should get something else... but the truth is if i'm happy with the strat i could only perfect its sound i guess... thanks man you're right i guess i should keep my project going...
