Rob Grill passed yesterday due to complications from a stroke near his home in Florida.
He was the lead singer-songwriter and bass player for The Grassroots.

Thanks for the memories and rest easy, Rob!

He was only 16 when they had their first hit Midnight Confessions-another premature loss of a great entertainer. Thanks for the great songs Rob.

My favourite Grassroots songs were Temptation Eyes and Oh Belinda.

When you see a man go, It reminds one of his own mortality. :( A frightening thing for a lot of folks that are the same age. Me included. RIP Rob Grill :(

Mr. Grill died in a hospice facility near his home. The 67 year old vocalist and touring bassist for the Grass Roots was in a hospice facility following two recent strokes and had more recently been in a coma following a fall. It was written in the Orlando Sentinel that he passed while listening to "Let's Live For Today" by the Grass Roots.

In 1966 The Grass Roots was born as a studio project of songwriters P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri with Barri in the producer role. Rob Grill replaced the original bassist in the L.A. based project then called the 13th Floor, but became the Grass Roots as soon as they were signed to Dunhill Records as Dunhill owned the name and wanted to use it. Barri and Sloan completely rebuilt the band in 1967 with an all new lineup, which is when Mr. Grill came aboard as lead vocalist and the band now known as the Grass Roots found real success.

Grill sang lead on the Grass Roots most commercially successful recordings, "Let's Live For Today", "Midnight Confessions" and "Sooner Or Later" which was their last big hit. The group had a total of 11 top 40 hits, all produced by Steve Barri. The group disbanded in 1975. In 1979 Grill recorded "Uprooted" which was his solo album backed by some players from a band known as Fleetwood Mac who had also had some success of their own.

By 1982 Rob Grill reformed the Grass Roots and had began playing the oldies band circuit and county fairs. In 2008 he stopped playing all the Grass Roots dates and instead was billed as an occasional featured guest vocalist, but he still owned the band, the band's website and rights to use the Grass Roots name.

It is well known that Studio musicians played on the music tracks for most bands recording in L.A. and NYC during this time. For example Carol Kaye played the bass on the hit version of "Midnight Confessions."

Great tune!

We had "Where Were You When I Needed You" on our playlist back in the day.
