Effects loops are a waste of 1/4" input jacks.

I have a BDRI. I hated that amp for about a year. Then on the forums someone had a post about this volume control that goes in to the effects loop. WOW what a cool thing. I now run the amp at 7's and 8's this little voulme control lets me max the amp out and then control the loudness so I can play it in the same room with out hurting my ears. As far as the effests loop never used it, just for the vloume control.. I now love that amp...Best ever. I prolly have more then 100 gigs on it plus countless jams and stuff. Have'in the Master volume is a god send and opens the amp to more and more tones at a level that wont hurt your ears..MD

Yeah but...

Effects loops must serve a purpose, as they are on a lot of top name, top quality, amps. I mean, I've heard that a few pros (example - Peter Frampton) even have their gear rigged through A/B switches and/or through an effects loop on their main amp on stage.

if, in fact, it's an effects loop and not some other circuitry designed for something else trying to act as an effects loop, then yes.
the vox valvetronix amps have only one tube in the preamp where the guitar plugs into. the effects loop is in the amp circuitry after the preamp, so the guitar gets all the benefits of the tube, then the signal gets processed and sent to the speaker, so less noise from effects plugged into the loop and amp circuitry, and the full bodied, fat sound of the tube powered guitar.

but that's an effects loop, not a "pre in / power out" circuit like in the hot rod deluxe and other amps.

if you have an effects loop and some extra 20' t/s jacks to spare, might as well use it.

NOTE:On the Vox website they say that the Vox hybrid amps differ from other modeling amps in that the 12AX7 tube is in the power amp section,Not the preamp section and the owners manual on my AD-120-VTH it also verifies this. This is why the Vox hybrid amps are able to get a much more tube like response and sound than other hybrids.

Effects loops aren't meant to be used with every kind of effect willy-nilly. If the pedal affects the volume or tone put it inline between the guitar's output jack and the amp's input. If it's a delay based effect (such as echo, chorus, phaser, flanger, etc) put it in the loop and use the pedal's mix/depth knob to control the ratio of dry to affected signal.

Simples :D

Or just don't use the effects loop and avoid the pointless headache altogether, all the while sounding exactly the same as you would going through the loop.

I disagree with most of the opinions here that effects loops are worthless. The effects loop on my Concert (II) is completely out of the tone shaping as long as nothing is plugged into it. And conversely if I use a short cord and run the Preamp in to the Preamp output it brings an additional gain stage into the mix and is something I really like. I understand that some don't want to use it and that is fine, but for me, it sure is nice to have a little extra oomph when i need it.

FWIW
