Okay, so everyone has seen Angus Young wearing the kilt for years, and Zak Wylde oft wears a modern, solid black one. The Great Scots were a kilted British Invasion band 40+ years ago.

And there are a great gob of current kiltmakers who sell off-the rack and casual and custom anywhere from $25 to $700 tartan solid and camouflage and tradesman's and survival and hiking and steampunk and punk kilts, in wool, acrylic, cotton, poly-blend, canvas, even denim and leather.

Any of you folks taken the step to liberate your loins and kilt up (and then pick some guitar)?

Yep. I've had one for a while with our family tartan. Hand made, wool from Scotland made by a local kilt maker. I have the whole dealio. Ghillie Brogues, Sporran, sgian dubh, hose, matching flashes. Don't wear it when I gig. Not yet anyway. I'd go with a casual kilt to gig with. It's always good for a free pint of stout.

Turned out he was on his way home from a local Bag Pipe club mtg. or practice and he proceeded to Kick My A#444%^, Yes I had it coming but he dident need to do such a good job. 8)    Now every time I see one I want to go the other way. :)

Hi JSJH: the whole subject of tartan is vexed and dubious. But without going into that I supposedly have a family claim to be allowed to wear the Murray tartan (though that is not my surname) and I do have a kilt tucked away somewhere in that flavor.

Rest assured: I will never, ever be posting pictures of myself wearing that item, let alone bearing a guitar. No sir.

Mind you, a Strat finished in the Murray tartan. Might that look good, I wonder? A future guitar finishing project perhaps? Hmmm...

"so everyone has seen Angus Young wearing the kilt for years"

I've never seen him wearing a kilt. His traditional stage outfit is a schoolboy's uniform -- shorts & matching jacket, cap and tie.

I belong to the Cameron clan, but my item of tartan apparel is a tie not a kilt.

Anyway, back to the topic -- How about the guy in the Bay City Rollers? How many kilted guitarists could there be?

Couple weeks ago, at the local, "Taste of..." our local suburb, a guy wandered past in a worn Utilikilt in solid black. It had tools hanging from loops and he wore combat boots and a grubby tee, definitely a tradesman. Looked it up, there is a "tradesman's" off the shelf Utilikilt model.

Not the slightest personal desire to give him trash about the kilt or his ponytail. 'Found his garb a refreshing change from the projectile vomit inducing uniformity-triteness of blue jeans. A number of ladies definitely smiled and stared. Two accompanied the kilted gent.

Interesting hearing a couple folks say (above) wearing the kilt would "earn" them an assault with intent to do serious bodily harm. Why are potential assailants so afraid of an article of clothing different than blue jeans, they "need" to react with anger and violence?

Do they also feel similar "need" to violently attack Orthodox men in all black with curls and yarmulkes, Afro-garb-wearing men? Indian men in colourful, flowing silk trousers and robes? The Amish? Middle easterners in robes? Sikhs with turbans?

Or is their "righteous" indignation and wrath only directed at kilted men?

What was that again about, "...land of the free..."?

There might be future surprises in store for the easily-incited-to-violence; 'learned there are tartans and kilts available for the US Marines, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy, Law Enforcement, Firefighters, National Defense. And yes, casual kilts in current ripstop digital camouflage fabrics, for serving soldiers.

I wear mine around town, never had a problem. Women tend to like men in them for some reason. My wife really likes it. The real question is, regimental or not? There's a Queen on the throne so you shouldn't go regimental, but with all due respect to the Queen, it's been over 90 degrees outside.

A little aside regarding tartans. In St. John's NL,we had our own neighbourhood version of Hell's Kitchen called Munday Pond.It was a very low rent and rundown block of tenements where they actually used their bathtubs to store wood and coal in during the 40s and 50s.Anyway the black leather jacket was the common attire of the Munday Pond crowd and the jackets became refered to as Munday Pond Tartan. These days the area has been built up and the criminal element has largely disappeared except for a handful of rogue families.

You live in Metro Chicago and you have to ask a question about violent behavior?
I was joking, but I find your remarks ironic since I would be more afraid to walk your streets in everyday attire, than to sit under the front sign of Tootsie's Lounge in Nashville wearing a kilt and singing Tiny Tim songs at 2 am. :D
Lighten up man.

Hey Reb, my biggest issue would be toting my concealed-carry gun.

AFAIK, Bianchi doesn't catalog any inside-the-waistband "kilt" holsters.

You either have to get a smaller gun or a bigger Sporran.

There's an individual in my hometown who wears a kilt very often, but the only problem is the thing barely reaches his mid-thigh. I'm not joking, I think he bought a girl's kilt-inspired mini-skirt...obviously, it doesn't look as good on him as it would a chick. With my modesty, I would be afraid my naughty bits would show!

But he's quite a character--last winter, the Lady Armadillo called me on the phone and she was laughing so hard I couldn't understand a word she was saying. She gave the phone to the Armadillo Child, who was laughing almost as hard. Eventually, I got the story from them that The Mini-Kilted One took advantage of the record snowfall to start cross-country skiing through the neighborhood...in the mini-kilt, no less--no pants or anything covering the legs, just the kilt and a coat.

Oh, well...he would probably laugh at my moncho poncho.
