I just watched -- for the umpteenth time -- EC play Stormy Monday on the "Cream: Royal Albert Hall" DVD.

If the good Lord would somehow enable me to play that song just one time with that incredible tone and phrasing, I could die a happy man.

(Yes, I know there are dozens of great versions -- SRV, T-Bone, Gary Moore, et al, and I probably have at least a dozen or more -- by numerous great guitarists, but that particular version from that particular night just speaks to my soul.)

My personal favourite is a live Allman Brothers one. Absolutely incredible. Slowhand does a fine job too. I think I have that entire show in mp3 format on my iTunes...

Yep,that's a good one for sure, truer to the T-Bone Walker version.
I still like the Bobby Blue Bland,Allman arrangement better, there's more chord work to support the melody.

Oh Yeah! Love that version and I've watched and listened to it dozens of times!
When you learn how to play it, you can teach it to me.

"Stormy Monday" is my favorite performance on the Cream DVD, but I have to admit I like the Allman Bros. version just a bit more. I love the sound of 9th chords.

It's that repeated note section that does it..... just like the beginning of the solo in Holy Mother.

Sublime!

+1 those are both great tunes...and I always like EC's Yardbirds version of Smokestack Lightning.

That's a song with many interpretations. I prefer the straight-ahead I-IV-V chording.

Currently: '89 Clapton; '08 Gilmour NOS'; '08 Deluxe VG; '10 '57VHR; '02 Les Paul Heritage Custom Elegant; Ovation Thin Body Acoustic; Line6 Axis>AX2 conversion; Crate Taxi, Crate Limo' ZT Club 12; D'Addario 10's on the guitars and the Gilmour Electric Hybrid Set on the VG; There have been 5 Strats, a Tele, and two PRS before the present lineup.

First electric was a '60 Danelectro short horn through a Danelectro Centurion and Reverb; followed by the first Stratocaster, a '58 through a Fender Concert Amp, acquired from a bandmate of mine. Sold it to me when he bought a Fender Jaguar the year the guitar was released. You might say that Stratocasters are in my blood.{...but everyone should own at least one LP if not simply to pay homage and respect  ]
