What's the most cost effective way to record my guitar amp onto my computer? I have Audacity for the software end of it. That's all I have at this point.

Guitar--->Amp---> ? --->Audacity

I realize at 20 bucks this is kinda cheap. My budget is around 50 -

Would this just be a wast of money? The important factor here to me is the mini-plug fits my sound card...

That should work, just make sure your sound card can handle it.

What do you mean by handle it? I'd be using the onboard sound from a Dell Dimension 2400. Kind of a basic XP office computer. I do have a better sound card from SoundBlaster I could swap into there if needed...

You will probably be happier in the end with something like this from m-audio

Yeah, that's cool... but it's not live recording.

Trying to stay close to your budget. Maybe something like this? http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/lexicon-lambda-usb-desktop-studio. It's a little more but will do live recordings.

You could just plug a simple mic into your soundcard and record your amp, but that may sound like crap, just due to the soundcard's firmware.

So, what I would get is an external USB audio capture like the Roland 'DUO-CAPTURE' http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=1155&ParentId=104, it's $80 at GC http://www.guitarcenter.com/Roland-Duo-Capture-H72397-i1835613.gc.

I use an Edirol UA-4FX, which shares the same DNA as the 'DUO-CAPTURE'. The 'DUO-CAPTURE' also comes bundled with Cakewalk SONAR X1 LE, which much more powerful than Audacity.

Well, just came back from my local Best Buy with this...
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audi ... 0000000000

Before I open it up, (non-returnable) has anybody used it?

That looks like it would do the job. I would consider getting a usb interface that way you could plug a sm57 or what ever mic you wanted. Plus, you could direct record your guitar if you wanted to.

I was considering the Avid USB interface box thing, then I'd need a mic and cable. All said and done that's $200. More than I'm willing to spend right now. Maybe in the long run it would be better than what I just bought... time ticking away. I'm watching some YouTube on it now. Really wanna just open it and use it... any last opinions?

well if that is the most you are willing to spend. It is probably the best you will do. Looks good for the money.

Yeah. I need the money right now and I'm doing a job that pays $300. So the majority of that money needs to go towards little things like rent, bills, food... I'm not sure if I wait a month that the money will be there to spend even $100 on a non-essential like this. Something always comes up.

I started out today looking for an old computer mic in the garage. Couldn't find that and started thinking I could get a little dynamic mic for 10-20 bucks. Then I walked into the store and found this as an alternative to a full blown interface and xlr mic...

ProTools looks nice. I'm watching a couple tutorials on it now on the Tube. I think I'm gonna open the box soon.

I have always wanted to play with the lite version of pro tools. PhilX says he uses it. I have not had the chance as of yet. I understand about the money, I need new strings for two guitars and I don't want to spend.

Recording to computer is difficult to do cheaply. I just started into it about two weeks ago and I couldn't believe how my lists kept growing with stuff I needed. I have a pretty good Dell laptop and I'm struggling with latency and gapping problems. I wanted to buy a new Mac Pro but didn't want to spend the money, now I'm thinking I'll need to once I get beyond working with two or three tracks.
