Pitifully, the bridge that I wrote in a song that my band plays always kicks my butt. It's not that technical, it's just a chord progression followed by a slide lick. But for some reason every time we get to it I forget it, or just plain mess up on it. I guess I'm just going to have to keep practicing it.

As far as songs that just kick my butt technically, Dirty Pool has got to be it. It just kills my right arm strumming like that for so long.

Hmmmmm.... I'd say it's probably the 2nd solo in "Crossroads" by Cream back when EC was ripping away on a psychadelic Gibson SG or Firebird. I can play "Crossroads" like everyone can, and match EC on the 1st solo. But, I botch it up on the 2nd solo and still botch it up to this day.

The other song that kicks my butt -but then, I won't even attempt to play it - is Jimi Hendrix's famous "Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock. I still have no idea how he did what he did back then!

I do the Mayall/Clapton tune "Little Girl" and the vocals are tricky while
playing at the same time, then that sync'd guitar and bass line in the solo
come in and I get it all right about 80% of the time, but it's that 20% that's
usually at a place where a lot of 'players' are watching that kills me!

Here's another guy's version - - couldn't find a 'live' Beano clip:

There is a passage in Machine Gun that still gives me trouble, that's the "air raid siren" sound that Jimi does by stretching the G string almost off the neck at the 12th fret and does hammerons at the 16th fret all the while diving and letting up on the whammy bar with his forearm. That's incredibly difficult to master and make it sound convincingly like the way he did it,and you definitely need an upside down Strat to pull it off.

It took me weeks and months to learn that song when it was new (approx 40 yrs ago!). Last year I was with some guitar playing friends and we took turns playing some of the old songs. I was doing Stairway and about a third of the way through it I forgot what came next!

It sux to get old.

You don't need to get old to botch up Stairway!

I remember playing it with the band i was in at the time (I was on keys) when i was in my mid 20s. Granted we put it in the set late, and it was a little (ahem) under rehearsed but by the start of the instrumental section after the verses I realised we were all playing different bits.. :? After floundering about for a few more bars (with me looking despairingly at our drummer), he played a quick shuffle and we all went into the guitar solo - plain sailing from there, but still very embarassing. And we really rated ourselves too.. Never played it since  Actually, maybe not quite as embarassing as the time another vocalist of ours lost his balance doing a Paul Rogers back bend and fell into the drum kit.. (but I guess we all have those stories lol) - maybe we should have a great stage foul up thread..

The piece currently tormenting me is Samba Pa Ti by Santana. For god's sake, it's only a 2 bar organ break!

The section before the solo in Stairway To Heaven is where most people fail.

When you are playing an iconic song, the audience knows when you fail.

Right! it's one reason I always hated to play a song that everyone has listened to so much that they've memorized it....I will never play "Freebird" again!
