Can you please let me know why Canadians are exempted from participation in Fender contests, giveaways etc? We buy lots of Fender products too, but whenever an ad for a contest pops up in my email, I'm unable to participate because I live in Toronto. If it's a legal thing, why not have Canadian contests etc?

I wouldn't worry about it ....people here in the U.S. never win anyway.I think they just run the contest to get your info and than sell it to every other website out there.I never hear of anybody winning and especially not me.I'm thinking its all a crock of $@!&

Sorry for the Canadians and Fender contests. I know a few Forum members who have won stuff both in the US and England, so you can win. I still enter every contest I want to, but have yet to win anything myself.

We in Canada are exempted because of complicated trades, duties and excise laws, still that's hard to fathom since you'd think that because of the Free Trade Agreement we'd be eligible.Gibson also has the same type of rules yet if you look at their past winners lists there are several Canadian winners-go figure.DBZ guitars has a Win IT All Contest that's open to international winners yet the winners are responsible for any duties, taxes and tarrifs on winnings.Even if Fender and other companies were allowed to make rules such as these I wouldn't mind having to pay $200 dollars in taxes and duties for a $2,000 guitar or amp.

That's actually not 100% true anymore -- several of our more recent giveaway opportunities have included Canada. Keep your eyes peeled for opportunities. We can't do this for every opportunity due to reasoning that others have covered here but have been doing it off an on whenever possible.

Please don't post baseless accusations of this nature. At one point I personally handled fulfillment of all of our giveaways (thankfully I've managed to offload that particular responsibility to someone else :-) ) so I can assure you that we do indeed have winners for each and every giveaway opportunity that we post. The comment regarding selling our entry lists is similarly ill-founded.

Thanks Brad, just want to be clear: is it mainly due to duties and taxes, or are their other reasons as well? And if so, what specifically are they?

If it is only due to duties and taxes, is it possible to have Canadian contestants "opt in" thus stating their willingness to pay such fees if chosen as a winner?

Brad..didn't mean to get you upset. It just seems that I never see any winners of any contests ever posted on the forum, nor do I really see any winners publicly thanking Fender on the forums for the prize they have won.It seems either that it is a hush, hush deal or I am simply not seeing the threads of winners of any of these said contests.I will keep my comments to myself reguarding the issue.Sorry to ruffle the feathers brotherman.I was only pointing out what I see and what other members are probably wondering themselves concerning these contests.Peace

A lot more people enter Fender's giveaways than post on these forums. In fact I'd say a much higher percentage of people that enter them probably aren't aware there is a forum on this site, or don't care about forums.

Hello scarleg: on this Forum there have been many winners of competitions and I can assure you they have all thanked Fender very publicly. And there have been winners outside the US too: here in Britain Rhumba won a Fender guitar stool, Nikininja won an acoustic guitar and I won a $300 spending spree at the online Fender.com store. All in competitions open to everyone.

I have thanked Brad and Fender many times for that - and am only too pleased to do so again - thank you! :D

Don't worry, guys: the competitions are real and win-able. And I have not seen the slightest evidence of my data being sold to other companies, which would be highly illegal where I live and probably where Brad works too. Rest easy.

Cheers - C

It's a damn sight further from Corona to my house than it is Corona to Canada. :D
There are legal obligations that have to be fulfilled when produce crosses borders. Making international contests a bit of a heartache for the host and sometimes the winner too.
I could bemoan the customs and excise bill that landed a month after I received the guitar. It was a paltry price to pay for such a gift, so I wont. But a bit of a shock to the system non the less.

It's not Fender's fault I live outside their national borders.

No need at all to apologize mate. It's just the way memory works, we all forget stuff, especially when we don't experience it firsthand.
It is a great guitar, really toppy. So much so that you can run it into a Marshall and let the thing roar.
I'll record that one day when all the neighbors are out.

I just think it's important for people to know that these wonderful gifts can land on your door. You'll use em quite happily. Then a couple of weeks later through no fault of Fender's that your government can impose a charge on you receiving the gift/prize.
At the time the bassist in the band I was in is a very high priced, educated, accountant and thoroughly nice fellow. He looked right into it for me and even spoke to his friends at Revenue and Customs. There was no way round it, I the recipient had to pay the bill not the prize giver. Legally I as owner was responsible for the debt and there was no way round it.
Not a problem on my end. Just a tiny crimp on a otherwise joyous occasion. All I could think was "WOW £xx for this! DEAL!!!". I however can't help wonder what trouble it could have caused for someone less fortunate. We can't expect Fender to look into the legalities of prizes/gifts for every country.
