So guys, in my on again off again search for a boost/overdrive pedal I think I have settled on a BOSS SD-1 Super Overdrive. I love how easy it is to dial in a creamy blues tone, and then easily dial in a nice hot, country lead tone.
Anyone have experience with this pedal? And how would you rate it as far a durability goes?

Hey Tim, I think the SD-1 is an excellent pedal, especially for the price. It definitely works best as a booster. 90% as good as a TS-9 for less than half the price. As is the case with all Boss pedals, it's also super durable.

I have owned one since September last year. It's a great pedal for the money. Doesn't ever conflict with my delay creating that harsh resonance a lot of ODs do.

Extremely reliable, looks good, very easy to use. Set the 'tone' dial to 11 o' clock for rhythm, or 2 o' clock for a great cutting solo sound. Basically, just adds/removes mids as far as I can see... love soloing with it. Works especially well with a bumfucker in the bridge.

Good 'go to' pedal - have one in my lounge. Got it from the boulevard of broken dreams (Cash Covertors) for £20.00..

Plenty of gain. Superb for the price and being bright yellow it's always easy to find!

Wouldn't hesitate to use it live, if something happened to my Fulltones..

Was looking at Tommy (Styx) Shaw's gear list the other day. He uses both SD1 and the infamous Digitech Bad Monkey on stage. Although his tech handles a lot of his modulation/time effects off stage..

Tim,
I have one and absolutely love it. I use it to boost my leads and when I need to carry my rhythms a bit. They are very durable and solid pedals! Great choice!
ABS :D

Thanks guys...I've never been one to use pedals before, so I have no experience with BOSS at all, but I loved how the pedal sounded at the store. My only concern was durability, but that doesn't sound like it's an issue.

That's how I plan to use it ABS. I run my amp just a little crunchy for rhythm/most lead parts. The pedal will be mainly used as a boost for solos with probably just a bit of it's own gain dialed in.

Boss are pretty much industry standard effects pedals.

Plenty sturdy and easy battery access. Can't go wrong.

Tim-
Have checked out the MXR MicroAmp?
It doesn't add any grit, but it is a great boost; it brings out more of everything--the nuances, tone and punch, while keeping what you are already feeding into your amp without coloration.
If you're not gonna use the Boss SO for dirt so much, the MicroAmp might suit you well.
If you're rich this week, the Keeley Katana is basically the same thing as my MXR, just with a slightly different package.

I have a Keeley SD1 and I think it's awsome. I like it better than the TS808. It's got a little more hair but the essential sound of the guitar still comes through and it feels like there's less compression. Great for Blues and Classic Rock but definitely lacking for sounds requiring serious levels of grind and compression. It's not a typical shredder pedal.

I think I tried that one out and wasn't satisfied... I'll take this opportunity to recommend the Radial Texas Bones. I can't say enough good things about this pedal. It even reaches almost into distortion territory. Dual channel selectors so you can stomp your way to a completely different sound. Check it out.

One of my first pedals was an SD-1. I got it used and it looked like someone had dragged it behind their pickup truck on a gravel road for a mile, but it worked fine (so as far as reliability goes, I'd rate it at bullet proof). But being a 13 year old metal head at the time with my only gear being a Roland Micro Cube, a Squier Strat (no mods) and a pawn shop find Peavey T-60 I thought it sounded terrible. So I ended up selling it to fund a Boss Metal Zone, which I ended up selling to fund a custom made overdrive pedal. Recently I've played an SD-1 with my Strat through a tube amp and that (plus the fact that I have five years of playing under my belt) made a huge difference! Now I think they sound awesome, and I really regret getting rid of mine.

I haven't had a chance to play one through my specific amp, or a jet city at all, but I played one through a few different tube amps and it really sounded sweet. A lot of people have recommended I go with a Fulltone OCD, but playing those pedals side by side, I think the SD-1 sounds best across the board. And the price is way better. The only other pedal I thought came even close was the Boss Blues Driver, but still the sd-1 won out.

So, I finally went down a picked up a BOSS SD-1 today. And I must say, I'm loving this pedal! I should have picked one up long ago. I used it with an Am. Dlx. Tele, and an Egnater Tweaker...what a setup that was! (but that's a different topic altogether).
