Can we get the link for this ebay bass. If it's in good shape and truely is worth the $400 retail, then yes, it is a good deal. But something doesn't seem right about it at that price.

You shouldn't have any problem switching over to bass.

Do you really,REALLY want to be a bass player?

Are you considering changing instruments just because you want to be in a band?

How pissed will the band be if you decide in a few weeks or months that you really don't like being a bass player after all?

Make sure you know the real answer to all those before you consider buying an instrument.

Your post doesn't sound like your convinced this is something you want to do.

Take a little caution before you buy that guitar off of Ebay. I bought one and it was a disaster. The guitar had numerous problems and I sold it one month later. I wouldn`t buy an insturment I couldn`t try before buying it, you never know what your getting until its too late.

There are two approaches to your dilemma.
1. Sure. Switch to bass. How hard can it be! There're only 4 strings so it should be easy (this my friend is sarcasm at work). You may decide that you like bass and find a good healthy respect for bass players and what they do. Most guitarists *think* they can play bass .........usually right up until they actually have to do it. It requires an entirely different approach and technique than one of those short skinny stringed things.

2. Look for inspiration from guitarists turned bass players. Somebody like.....Oh, maybe Paul McCartney, Paul Goddard of ARS, Ron Wood of the Stones was a better bass player than he was a guitarist. You might decide you'd like to become a full fledged member of "The Brotherhood of the Low End". :D

Absolutely, go for it!

I began learning (formally) both guitar and bass together. Please bear in mind that there is a different mind set and approach to either. Yet, these two mind sets also make for a deeper appreciation of music and the one surely helps the other. Besides, it's fun (and educational) to play in bands where you can approach the music from two different angles. Enjoy!!

Go for it. And if you really like you it the bass is a piece of crap you can upgrade it down the line.

Only get the bass if you want to actually play bass, and not just because there is an oppurtunity to play bass. Because if the oppurtunity is there, but the desire to play bass isn't, then I don't see it working out well for you or your friend. Another thing to consider is, how serious is this other band? Is it something where they just play occasionally? Or do they have a steady schedule? I just bring that up because while bass may seem like a fun idea for the occasional gig, if its something more serious, then you'll need to be more serious about playing bass, otherwise you'll just be holding the other band back...Just some food for thought.

NNNOOOOO!!!! do not get a bass offline! you should know that every instrument has a unique feel and playability if you play guitar. and there could possibly be something wrong with it if they are sellin it for that low a price. id say go to a guitar store and find a good used one.

"So it was like, Uh-oh, we haven't got a bass player. And everyone sort of turned 'round and looked at me. I was a bit lumbered with it, really... it was like, 'Well ... it'd better be you then.' I don't think you would have caught John doing it; he would have said: 'No, you're kidding. I've got a nice new Rickenbacker!' I was playing piano and didn't even have a guitar at the time, so I couldn't even say that I wanted to be a guitarist."

- Paul McCartney
