Unfortunately his budget and his musical tastes are at opposite ends of the earth. He's not been really clear as to what he's asking from his amp but I bet he could find a used Line 6 Axis/AX2 which would give him the crank he's looking for along with a palette of built-in effects he could seriously play with. They don't appear to be bringing more than $400 these days. I agree with SA's assessment of the the 212R, but it certainly is a Chevy compared to Marshall's Ferari.

When you say non-modeling, do you mean no DSP effects, either, or just no amp models?

I still say the FM212 is the way to go; they're $300 new (and possibly less used). I have not seen a ton of them at pawn shops, which means people are keeping them (a small theory I have--pawn shops are full of stuff people don't really want or like...with notable exceptions, of course).

Well, regardless of my experience with the 212R I have read a lot of favorable reviews on them, and it sounds like they rate highly with our knowledgeable forum members. The Bandit 112 sounds like a nice amp, and every Peavey I have owned or had any experience with has been nothing but reliable and built like a tank. Good luck either way you go, and remember when playing with a band, amp placement can be everything; if you find the new amp you choose doesn't seem like it's got what it takes to keep, simply moving it can make a huge difference.

Somehow, I suspect that's not what you want to hear, is it?
It takes about a year for me to get $350

Hi again NC: I entirely get what you are saying. You are dissatisfied with budget range amps but you don't have the readies for top end stuff.

I expect there are some rich kids amongst us who can have whatever they want. But most of us have been where you are and sympathise completely. All I'm saying: every time you spend out on a lesser option you are just further putting off the day you get your hands on the tool you actually need. Comes a time you have to just decide to hold fire till you can get a halfway decent tube machine - which is what you are really after. So save your pennies, prioritise and hold your breath till it is yours.

Nobody is suggesting you must wait for a $2500 top of the line stack. That would be silly talk. Fine tube combos with enough grunt for your job are to be had on Ebay for sensible money. I just think you need to pause, consider what amp will realistically get your job done for you and then aim at that. Don't compromise too much.

Though I also think Screamin' Armadillo is talking plenty of sense. His advice is good.

I'm just wondering whether I've ever heard anyone claiming they're lusting after an amp that is thin and cold? Nope, I don't believe I have... :|

I saw Albert a couple of times at Antone's in Austin...that venue seemed to bring out the best in him.

He was funny and scary, smooth and raw, elemental and sophistocated all at the same time...I know that doesn't make sense, but it's like you said, "cool and hot"...a walking musical dichotomy.

Offstage, he was one of the nicest gentlemen I ever met. He gently corrected the guy who asked him for a pick...he could have said, "I don't use one of those--if you really were a fan, you'd know that!!" (I've seen some "legends" who are bitter at any question or statement that reveal a person's ignorance about their style, history or whatever).
Rather, he politely said, "You, know, I just never used one. I'm sorry I don't have one to give you..."

If you want to see/hear some great stories about the Iceman, go out and get the DVD, "Antone's--Home of the Blues"...there's some great performances and stories about him as well as a couple of dozen other blues greats.

Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack the thread...at least I didn't pull out some footwear pics! :P

I don't want to offend or criticize anyone's amp (and I've seen quite a few people whose music I like playing through a Hot Rod Deluxe or DeVille), but I have always thought that the HR amps were "meh" at best. They have a personality like a loud, brash, semi-hot chick that at first seems attractive, but after a while, she starts to get on your nerves.

...better to save up for a higher-end Fender tube amp or something patterned after a classic Fender than the HR.
Just MHO, YMMV.

An amp that nobody has brought up that might fit the bill is the tube-powered Peavey Classic 30 or Classic 50, as well as the Peavey Delta Blues amps...those amps are monstrously good for the price, and used, they are very reasonable.

...and they lend themselves to my earlier-mentioned "Pawn Shop" theory...you rarely see one in a pawn shop, so people are keeping them instead of unloading them.
