Hey Brad correct me if im wrong but why is the "custom" logo in cursive like the mexican/japanese models..all the real vintage customs ive seen have that logo in normal script...same thing with the custom shop limited model that was released last year...in the picture shoot they show the correct straight logo but in the production model its cursive again...

i feel that thats one of the main things that u can point out quickly as far as it being a vintage/now usa guitar or a mexican/japanese custom...

The 72 custom looks sweet. Is the humbucker on this the same as on the MIM?

How does Fender manage to soak folks for $1600 when AXL can build a good guitar in America for $209? And a superb guitar in America for $549.

Not comparing the two directly of course, point being that this whole "Made in America" thing may not really be worth the awesome surcharge Fender is hitting us up for.

American luthiers are making affordable and good axes for the workingman, as Leo always promised. They just don't bear the Fender label anymore.

I guess its just because Fender has been around for a long time and is a trust worthy name that a lot of people grew up with.If you say Fender most likely even people who don't play guitar know of it. I'm a Fender person myself all around I'm not really into Gibson or PRS I always drift to the Fender section in the guitar stores because in my eyes Fender MIA guitars ='s quality. Think of it like this if Sony had a off brand like lets say "Pony" people would still go for Sony even if "Pony" was a lot cheaper. If you know the name for quality you stick to it :) just my opinion and I'm not saying there aren't guitars that are just as good I'd just like to stick to my Fender lol

Do anyone know this, if the pick ups differ in any way?

On the Classic Player:
Fender® "Wide Range" Humbucking Neck Pickup

On the American 72:
Fender® "Wide Range" Humbucking Neck Pickup
Unique Features: Improved/Revoiced Wide Range Humbucking Pickup

Does this this mean that the AV model pick ups is improved over the ones on the CP?

Yes, I agree that Fender's brand has a certain innate value and quality attached to it. There's no question of that. And it's not a matter of direct comparison of these guitars at all. And there's always brand loyalty, and that's not a bad thing. I just wanted to raise an issue of great interest to the cost-conscious consumer: Are there other American-made guitars that are much better deals than a Fender American? AXL is setting some new standards here, and there may well be others. American labor doesn't have to mean premium prices anymore.

And quality-wise, there's an AXL for $549 getting rave reviews for it's excellence. American-made. Maybe other homeland luthiers as well, don't know yet. I guess my hope would be that finally the American workingman can afford to buy an American-made product just as Leo envisioned. If that puts pressure on Fender to lower American-made prices, another good thing!

Just don't feel compelled to shell out $1600 just because it's American-made. The quality guitar choices for us paycheck-to-paycheck folks are finally widening beyond China and Korea and Mexico, and well below the $700 - $4,000 range that American-made usually means. This isn't a pitch to buy American quality at an affordable price, but if you can...why not?

I guess the American Special series is Fenders answer to that.

Definitely a step in the right direction, though the Highway One is even $100 cheaper.

Love to see a direct comparo between these $209/$549 American-made axes and the $700-800 American Fenders.
