Yesterday morning I did my morning Craigslist browsing. It's rare for me to ever really buy anything from Craigslist, but I ran across an ad selling a Schecter Tempest Custom w/EMG actives for $120. It took me all of 2-seconds to make the call. I already kinda knew about these from a friend of mine who loves his. He always says it can do everything.

It amazes me sometimes how much gunk people will allow to accumulate on their guitars. This one had so much sweat funk in every crevice, it took quite a while to clean it up. Some parts were rusted as a result of the gunk. I never understood that. Seriously, it's not very hard to wipe your guitar down every now and then.

There were some minor repairs and setups that needed to be done. Once I got done with my cleaning and setup work, the guitar plays phenomenal. The frets have very little wear, no fret buzz, and the neck is straight. I had no problems getting the action I like.

Originally my thinking was that I'd swap the pickups when I bought it. But when I was giving it it's first test run to test for switch or pot scratching, I was pleasantly surprised how the EMGs sounded for Reggae. I never would have thought a 81/85 set would be something you could use for Reggae.

I used to have a EMG KH20 pickguard back when I was playing hard-core. But I remember not being too impressed by it. This 81/85 set seems much better to me. I have a new respect for them. I'm finding it hard to NOT like the sound of them, even when backing off the vol and tone pots. They're pretty smooth, and I'm getting a good diversity from them sound-wise. They sound nice in the clean channel. And of course, since I do distorted solos, it's obviously a great set for that.

So after all is said and done, this is becoming one of my favorite guitars very fast. Korean made. Very solid. Well crafted. Plays like butter. Screams if you need it to. Schecter sure can make a solid product. I'm very happy with the find, and how this guitar performs.

From Metal to Reggae... Now where have you heard that before? 8)

That's a great find Shredd! My Hellraiser has the same pickups. I've never been a huge fan of them for clean tones, but they're awesome for most everything else; and they can't be beat for a wailing solo sound.. And I feel that my Schecter's build quality is top notch. Great score on this one, enjoy it. 8)

Yea, so far, it's been a lot of fun to play!! It has a short scale which is something I've been looking into more lately as well. I couldn't put it down for a couple hours last night.

I'm 100% happy with the Schecter so far. Even the EMGs. When you play Reggae, most of your rhythm work is very quick sharp attack chording. The EMG actives have a quick response, bold attack, and work very well with my effects in the clean channel. The rhythm chords REALLY jump out of this guitar and I like it.

I could see where if I were playing a different style of music, the EMGs might not be my favorite option for the clean channel. But After playing the Tempest, Ryan and I both agreed that EMGs are great for Reggae. I think I may have made him a little jealous with this guitar. Hahaha.

This is exactly the kind of thing that makes it a little frustrating to be a lefty. I have no issues or regrets playing left handed, but man, there's zero chance of finding the occaisional gem off craig'slist. Gear selection and color choices are just not there.

Good for you, though, shredd.

That's an absolutely fantastic buy - you did great there.

At the risk of adding a downer, let's just hope there isn't a bereaved former owner out there somewhere, bemoaning the criminal loss of a much loved friend..

Not at all adey. I bought it from the guitar player from this band. He's even playing it in their video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiCGhDsXaG4

All he said was he just got back from a tour and needed the money. The guy in the video is the guy that sold it to me. I would suspect that he has a few more guitars and was just willing to let this one go. It was a concern of mine when I was making the drive to take a look at it though. I'm always a little wary of that myself when I see a deal like this.

Incidentally, if you closely in the video, @ 3:26 it's missing the middle knob. That's exactly how I bought it as well. I just happened to have one lying around here and popped it on. The video was uploaded a year ago.

That's great news - nothing like being able to enjoy a great find with an easy conscience!

He let it go cheap though, becuase its a fine guitar. Played one myself a few years ago. Sounds like you'll be puttimg it to good use.
