just got one, and need some help from anybody who has any experience with the zoom r16.

laid down a couple of tracks to try it out, so far, very impressed with how clean it sounds.
i'm trying to:
1. add effects to recorded tracks.
2. add effects to input devices while recording.
i've tried both the "send return effect" and the "insert effect" functions. i can see the effects i'm trying to use on the display screen, but can't hear anything different while playing or recording the track.
any ideas on how to actually apply and hear the effects?

any help is much appreciated, and thanks in advance.
