Thanks Tim, sorry to hear your dad passed, mine died in 1987 so its been awhile.

Its a bit soon after the event but your right when the immediate grief has eased you then remember past times and the good memories.

Thanks again for the kind thoughts.

Well guys...Today was a terrible day for my family. The doctors, during a moment of mental responsiveness from Steve told Steve, Mary and I that the outlook was not good. He essentially told us that the only way Steve would survive would be to be on the ventilator for the rest of his life as his lungs were no longer strong enough for him to breathe on his own. He asked Steve if he understood what was being said, and Steve responded yes by nodding his head. Next he asked Steve if he wanted to continue on in this state, he responded with a shake of his head, no. I asked his the same question, he again replied no with a shake of his head. Mary asked him a final time, again, no. We sat with him for a while and talked to him. I told him that if I was in his shoes I would make the same decision, and that we all understood and loved him. Mary couldn't sit by him and watch him pass so I stayed with him along with my step dad. At 12:45pm they removed the breathing tube, and he was pronounced dead right after 1:00 pm. I was nervous about being in there for those last moments, thinking he'd be suffocating and in pain, but right before he passed I asked him if he was at peace, he nodded yes. He closed his eyes and basically it seemed he had simply fallen asleep, and he looked very much at peace lying there. He will be missed, and was a cornerstone of this family for years. Throughout my life, Steve was the only male role model I had to look up to, and he was always there for me when my dad wasn't around. Myself and my family thank everyone here for their prayers and wishes; there is still a lot of grief to be worked through and some tears left to shed but Steve will always be in our hearts, and such a peaceful passing gave us all a little comfort.

Condolences to you and your family, Tim.

I know it was a real gut-buster for all concerned.

Go with God, Steve

Thanks Arjay. With the obvious level of peace he felt in his last moments, it really has made this easier for us to come to grips with. He will be missed an incredible amount by many people, but it was obvious over the last 2 weeks that he was suffering and it was very difficult for me personally to see him lying there in that state and I know if it was me in that position I would want the same thing. I just hope that Mary will be able to come to terms with all of this, and I'm glad Steve was responsive enough to answer the difficult question for himself. I didn't want Mary to have to make that decision; this way she has no reason to carry any regret with her from this situation.

At least Steve was among those who loved him and knew him best. And his transcendence was consciously deliberate and peaceful.

I wish for you and your family peace and healing.

I know the pain of of losing family; father, mother, sister. Family is everything, the rest of life is just filler material.

God bless.

My condolences Tim. Be there for Mary... It's not what you do for those who are gone as much as it is what you do for those left behind. My prayer for you is to continue to provide strength and comfort to all who are grieving. Amen.

So sorry Tim for your families loss.
May you be comforted in your time of sorrow.
At least Steve had a choice and wasn't forced to live.
May God be with all of you, and bless you.

No one can explain away the feelings you had for your uncle. Know that God allowed you to be with him for a reason and though it will hurt for some time feel comforted that you were there and his decision was his and he knew what the limitations would be and how it woulds affect his family. God Bless him and his family and my prayers for you and the rest of his family and friends will continue...
