Me neither Ceallach, but my cousins are devout people and I know it means a lot to them which is why I ask for the prayers.

UPDATE: So we spent all day at the ICU again today, and according to the doctors, things (based on their scans and hard scientific facts) are getting progressively worse...however as I was leaving to head home I went in to see him for a minute. I put my hand on his shoulder and talked to him a little bit, as I was about to walk out of the room I told him that no matter what happens I'd be here for Mary (his wife). As soon as her name crossed my lips his eyes opened up wide and he looked directly toward me. So I stood there with him for just a second longer and then told him to get some rest and get better. At which point he closed his eyes...I asked him if he could hear to open his eyes again and he did. I again told him to get some rest and I'd be back to see him tomorrow, and he closed his eyes. I put my hand on his and he very gently gripped my hand, and I looked back and his eyes were open again, I asked if he needed anything and he just kept looking toward me; so I tried the old cliche technique and blink one time if he needed anything, he didn't blink. So I asked him if he was in pain, one blink for yes two for no, he blinked twice...no pain. I then asked him if he wanted to see Mary, one blink for yes two for no...this time no blink; he looked right at me and nodded his head yes! I went and got Mary and he was laying there with his eyes open when we came back in and he smiled as soon as she entered the room. This really was a great day, and the doctor who came in right after Mary and I also observed his responsiveness and commented that this is a very good sign that he has not suffered as much brain damage as they thought would be the case. Sadly, the joyous moment was trumped by the fact that Mary, after talking to him for a moment, had to use this moment of coherence to ask some very difficult questions. So today was bittersweet, but more sweet than bitter. I will be at the hospital again tomorrow, and I hope things continue progressing as they have.

Well Tim the fact that he understood what you were saying and he could communicate shows that he still has his cognitive skills.Lets hope that there's light at the end of the tunnel.I'm pulling for him-God Bless.

I agree...the doctors told us that the main damage his brain has suffered is in the lower portion of his brain, which controls movement, and the upper portion of the brain which controls cognitive skills is in much better shape. He did however say that he expects that Steve may be a quadriplegic if he recovers from this. The bleeding is getting worse however and they can't get his blood pressure to stabilize. I'm not sure what the numbers mean, but whatever reading they keep checking, they say he's at about 65% and yesterday that same reading was at 50%...if that number reaches 80% they estimate he will have 48 hours or less to live. That's a hard pill to swallow, because the bleeding is in an inoperable portion of his brain. I have been slowly coming to terms with what the future may hold, but my cousin Mary (his wife of 48 years) is really breaking down and I can see in her eyes that she is terrified of what the future may hold. This is really difficult for us all, but I am very concerned for her well being if he doesn't pull through.

well tim if he understood what you were saying that is a good sign-in the early stages of my stroke i couldn't understand what was happening, so this is good that he understands so early.
as for the movement; is his right or left side paralysed? my stroke happened in the lower part of my brain, which like you stated controls the movement. it'll be a real shame if he is paralysed on one side cause that i almost garunteed a nerve/muscle disorder after this, unfortuanetley. well i dunno, thats what the doctors told me and they were right-could be a totally different situation for your cousin, but remember times like this you have to think positive.
take care and keep us updated

It's hard to say right at this moment. He is twitching quite a bit while lying in the bed, it seems that the twitching is mostly in his right side. Sadly, the stroke that happened was only a symptom in a much larger condition and they expect that if he recovers he will be paralyzed from the neck down. I really know very little about medical terminology and a lot of what has been explained has gone a little over my head. But they believe that what happened was a series of major events. Beginning with a heart attack recently that he never mentioned so he was never treated for it, then what put him in the hospital was a blood vessel in his brain that burst due to extremely high blood pressure, which in turn caused the stroke or T.I.A as they are calling it by basically suffocating his brain.
I will certainly keep the situation updated, but sadly the work week begins again for me in about 9 hours and I won't know anything until late tomorrow afternoon. I am thinking positive, and at the same time preparing myself for the worst. Thanks again Riley for your concern and positive words...they mean a lot.

Thanks guys.

No real update today. Steve was less responsive than yesterday, we didn't go in to see him much today; too much mental stimulation can be a bad thing in the early stages of a brain injury. So we're in a sort of holding pattern right now. Only time will tell.
