I stopped in at Guitar Center earlier this afternoon. I was lucky that there were no 13 yr old kids hammering away badly on a guitar with the distortion maxed on "10". :x

I remember the old MXR Distortion+ pedal from years ago, and on a whim, I wanted to try one out with a nice Strat that I grabbed off the wall. The clerk hooked it up to a small Peavey combo amp, set the amp on clean, and handed me the cable. Once plugged in he raised the clean channel volume to a suitable level, and let me play with the MXR Distortion+.

Has anyone played with one of these, or had one years ago? I was curious, that's all... And I did NOT care for the sound of the pedal. It was extremely weak sounding, and when you cranked the gain knob up, it was so fuzzy and buzzy sounding, it sounded like a fly caught on flypaper! :x

Maybe it was the pedal, maybe it was the small Peavey combo I was plugged into, but wow... The MXR Distortion+ is not what I originally thought it was! I think it's supposed to be used as a booster pedal to an already dirty guitar signal. I know a lot of people have used it or probably still use it. But, I guess with the bright tone and single coils from a Strat, the pedal sounded really bad.

Hmmmm..... Anyway, long story short... I did NOT buy it...

i have a modded distortion plus. double check the battery life. when the battery goes the effect drops drasticlly. MXR has the new "badass 78" distortion too.

I remember those pedals as being the weak link of the old MXR line. Phase 90, Dyna Comp, etc., were all good, but the Distortion + was a sad little yellow thing with no muscles.

Subsequent MXR distortion pedals were much better--especially the Distortion III (an it's alter ego, the M-86 Classic Distortion)...and the new 78 badass is supposedly good, too.
