Hello,

I am interested in getting a wah wah pedal. I already have wah on my boss ME-25 multi effects pedal, would a dedicated wah be much better?

Dunlop seem to be the biggest manufacturer, so I think it would probably be one of their crybabys? But there are so many, I have looked on the website. I do not know where to start! I would like to keep it cheap(if possible)-has anyone got anything to say about the orginal crybaby wah, or the multi wah?

Any advice is appreciated, and if anyone has anything to say about wah pedals please tell me-i do not have a dedicated pedal yet, I have a multi.

thanks

A dedicated wah pedal is always better than a multi-effects pedal with a built-in wah. There is just something better and more classic sounding regarding the 100k pot & gear system, verses some strange type of linear circuitboard slot mechanism that's built into the multi-effects processors. They are two totally different animals...

I have a Dunlop Cry Baby wah and I also have an old beatup, but still working, 1998 Digitech RP7 Valve processor (remember the one with the 12AX7 tube inside it?). I hate the wah on the Digitech and don't use it. It just sounds awful and totally unlike the Dunlop Cry Baby. I just have the wah programmed for pitch shifting and whammy bar in a few of the sound banks.

There are hundreds upon hundreds of wah pedals out there.
- Dunlop Cry Baby (along with its other "flavors")
- Vox
- Morley
- Rocktron
...and a bunch of others.

You just have to play around with one and see which sounds good to you. But, in my opinion, the #1 wah pedal is Dunlop. Everybody has a Cry Baby wah pedal. I think it's some kind of rule! 8)

Ha! Just bought one yesterday. A Crybaby GCB95N. My very first pedal and it sounds great. Can't help but play, (or at least TRY to play), Jimi tunes. I tried another, more complicated one,, but it popped and made all sorts of funny noises.

I'm happy with my Crybaby. About $90 Canadian. :D

Peace,

I have the basic, very common, Dunlop Cry Baby....GCB95. It's everywhere, in every music store around. I'd go with that one.

Guitar Center has it on sale right now.... $69.99 8)

To my ears the Vox wahs always sounded better than the Cry Babys yet the Cry Baby Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy pedals are great sounding but cost a bit more.

I bought a Hendrix Wah (used) and took it back...my built-in Digitech Wah (RP-250) sounded way better! Then got a new Dunlop GCB95 and was really surprised at what a nice sound it had! The basic model is great!

+1 on the Dunlop. I think originally they were, Vox that is, and Dunlop Identical and mfg. by the same co. :)

does anyone know the difference between the different wahs? eg. what is the difference between the multi-wah and the original and a signature, like the hendrix one?

i just got a crybaby. love it because it reminds me of wahs that i used years ago.

as far as different types- they all make different sounds. i played a dozen or so wahs before deciding on the crybaby. some seemed to suck tone in the bypass mode, and some just seemed noisy or had a harsh sound to them.

put a few on the floor- play the type of music you like, and see what works best. like guitars and amps, there are many different types to choose, and my choice may or may not be the same as yours

There are many references on the web to which Wahs do what...here's a nice article:
http://members.chello.nl/~t.heertjes/Wah%20wah.html

Many of the differences revolve around the inductor used.

The Crybaby wahs are nice, but I really like the Vox 847 better, I have both, and had the dunlop first and once I played the Vox it was back on the shelf for the Crybaby. The Vox had better tone, better sweep, and it has lasted several years...I had to change the pot in the Crybaby.

FWIW

The built in wah function that comes with the Korg and Vox Multi-effects units are superb and come really close to approximating the tone of the original Vox Clyde McCoy. The wah function that comes with the Vox VC-12 Footcontroller is equally astounding.

The differences between the "standard" GCB95 and all the others range from minor to extreme; the Dunlop website has some good information and some sound clips as well, but...

...a wah pedal is almost as personal as the type of guitar you like or underwear that's comfortable for you. Your personal preferences regarding the components, the sweep, the tone, and many other options make it tough to suggest one.

I have a regular ol' Crybaby and I love it. I did take it apart and tweak the sweep a little bit, but I didn't drastically adjust anything...outside of the appearance! (rubber pedal top+ exacto knife + paint = 8) ).

Image

I formerly had an old Dunlop Jimi Hendrix System (JH1, I think) from the early 90s, and while it was pretty good, I liked the GCB95 better.

I tried (and liked) the Vox wah also...but the standard Crybaby did it for me. They're about $70 (street price) new, and you can find them used for $40 all the time (sometimes cheaper).
