Yeah thanks again everybody for the suggestions. I was given a store by James V Roy where I could order hopefully the same picks I bought before. I'm going to take a shot. If they are not the same I only lose 21 bucks. Worth it for me.

I wish I could do all the playing that I need to do with my fingers. I do hate having this intermediary device between my skin and the strings. When I do play with my fingers, the feel I have in my head seems to transfer to the strings better. The pick kind of gets in the way but unfortunately it is a necessary evil. With what I do, my playing runs the gamut of styles and I certainly cannot play any funky rhythm guitar with just my fingers. Nor can I play like the absolute SPEED DEMON that I am and execute the incredibly technical passages that are synonymous with virtuoso playing. (Oh my god. I'll wait for who ever is reading this to go and throw up) Did that ration of BS just come out of my mouth. I hope you know my tongue was firmly planted in my cheek when I said that. Believe me, I SUCK!!!!!!

Aright, gotta go. Thanks again. This place is fun!

Bob I for one hear you on that. When I was a kid and unable to readily afford plectrums, I used to switch between my plectrum and fingers with ease.
of course I was a kid, it probably couldn't have sounded worse.

So Bob, do you ever play on choppy water? Bet that's an experience. Like playing drunk but without the inebriating drinks.

Come on mate, tell us about life on a boat band.

Don't have the fish!
Make sure your cabin is near the lifeboats!

Well it's not a band per se. It is a group of thrown together musicians from all over the world that goes under the name of whatever ship we are on. Like for instance the last ship I was on was the Star Princess, so we were the Star Princess Orchestra. Usually 3 horns and rhythm section. What we are hired for is to play the music for the production shows which are kind of bullshit broadway shows. Like broadway but waaaaaay off broadway. But at least it is not top 40. Nothing wrong with top 40 but I did my cover band days years ago.

So you audition for the gig and you are judged on your sightreading ability, which mine sucks but I can do some other things and the guitar parts are not that entailed anyway. And everybody knows that guitar players cannot sightread anyway. But.....there are some monsters out there. I'm not one of them.

So it is a cool gig in the sense that you play many different styles of music and I love jazz so I do a lot of solo sets and sets with rhythm sections but our main job is to back up the entertainers. And believe me when 5:00 comes around and it is time for rehearsal for one of the fly on guest entertainers and I haven't seen the music yet, I start sweating. I need to get that stuff asap. because there is always the chance that somebody will have some written out guitar part that just happens to be unaccompanied so I am hung out to dry basically if I can't get the part. Which has happened.

But the cool thing about the gig is the travel. I used to work for Carnival and decided to change over to Princess for the travel aspects. Carnival only does the caribbean and mexican riviera. A good move because since dec. I have been on 4 continents and in about 15 different countries. Never would have been able to do that with Carnival.

Good points and bad points to the whole thing. One of the bad points is the equipment. The ships all have amps on them and most of them suck. With the exception of the amp I use in the theatre which is a Fender Deluxe, the rest of the amps on the ship absolutely suck. I am usually a class A tube amp guy back home but it is too costly to bring stuff along with me and too dangerous. So I use the ship crap amps. But I get a lot of time to practice since we only work maybe 3 hours a day. So it is a crap shoot with the caliber of musicians. I recently had to play with a russian piano player who really had no business being out there or at least playing in that type of environment. But he left and was replaced by a guy from Romania who was really good and very different. They really do things different over there wherever over there may be. But the US is doing something wrong musically. I am actually considering living elsewhere. They support the arts in all of these other countries. This piano players father sings with the opera in Romania which is funded by their government. And he has done that all his life. Unheard of in the US. I had to struggle and network for all the gigs I had back home which got to be really a drain. And when the economy tanked I started to look at ship for income. At least I am playing everyday and I was even told to clock in when I practice.

The main drawback is it is a corporate world. It is a corporation, run by bean counters in an office. You are paid by a corporation. Good pay and steady consistent work, but rules and managers and supervisors and dress codes and things that we as guitar players or musicians in general don't have to adhere to. It was a culture shock for me. I don't follow rules well.

Anyway, I won't bore you any longer. I need to take a look at the youtube videos I have downloaded today and cop some licks. I need to get my solo playing up to speed. (by solo I mean by myself chorded solo type stuff) Which I suck at. But getting better.

Okay later.
