The new Guitar World arrived in my mailbox this morning with the 100 Greatest Classic Rock Songs of All Time (yes, another one of THOSE lists...).

In order, the top 10 were:

1. 'Johnny B. Goode' - Chuck Berry
2. 'Stairway to Heaven' - Led Zeppelin
3. 'Purple Haze' - Jimi Hendrix
4. 'Sweet Child o' Mine' - Guns 'n' Roses
5. 'Enter Sandman' - Metallica
6. 'Hotel California' - The Eagles
7. 'Crazy Train' - Ozzy Osbourne
8. 'Eruption/You Really Got Me' - Van Halen
9. 'Smoke on the Water' - Deep Purple
10. 'Back in Black' - AC/DC

Let the debate begin (for my part, I would have put 'Layla' by Derek & the Dominos #1...it came in #12)!

Meh...These lists are pointless and represent the opinions of a very small cross section of society. FWIW though, going only by the 10 songs on that list, I say purple haze should be #1.

Guns 'n' Roses? Really?

List not credible based on this entry alone. :P

Definitely wouldn't have put Stairway to heaven that high, I probably wouldn't have it it the top ten at all to be honest.

+1 for Layla being number one, or at least top three.

+100 for Layla at #1

1. 'Johnny B. Goode' - Chuck Berry - Cool Tune, should be in top 10
2. 'Stairway to Heaven' - Led Zeppelin - Sorry OVERATED
3. 'Purple Haze' - Jimi Hendrix - Top 10 definetly
4. 'Sweet Child o' Mine' - Guns 'n' Roses +100 Should not even be in top 100!
5. 'Enter Sandman' - Metallica - Some one is kidding right?
6. 'Hotel California' - The Eagles - Yep a classic, but not top 10
7. 'Crazy Train' - Ozzy Osbourne - Classic but not Top 10 Either
8. 'Eruption/You Really Got Me' - Van Halen - Classic but not Top 10 Either
9. 'Smoke on the Water' - Deep Purple - +1 This surely belongs in Top 10
10. Back in Black' - AC/DC - Again classic tune, but not top Ten

I know these poles are popularity contests and is just compiled by who is willing to vote, but some of these are just rediculous...and where is White Room by Cream, anything by CCR and NO Jeff Beck...yup just rediculous!

I am going to list the 100 greatest reasons why I shouldn't care about top-whatever best song/artist/etc... lists:

1. Because they are stupid
2. Due to the fact that it's based on nothing but some nincompoop's opinion
3. And maybe some public opinions as well (More nincompoops)
4. They never say what makes one song better than the other, they just randomly arrange them in some hierarchy to make it look like they know something that they don't.
5. The only thing they are good for is posting them on forums where people like me can waste 15 minutes of my time ranting about how stupid these lists are.

Alright so I just don't have the energy nor do I want to spend more than 15 minutes making a 100-reason list of why I hate lists. Let's face it, there went 15 minutes that could have been put to much better use >_>

Edit: I can't believe it took me 15 minutes to write such a small post. I need coffee or something <_<

I'm not surprised that a lot of songs on the heavier side made it to the Guitar World list as in the past few years they've been more and more dedicated to the metal/shredder audience. If the editors of Guitar Player ,Vintage Guitar and others made up a best 100 list they'd all be quite different too.Guitar Player and Vintage Guitar would probably give a nod to players like John McLaughlin,Larry Coryell etc.
I don't pay any heed to these best 100 lists as they are very subjective and most people would dispute the findings of the panels for that simple reason.

This list is dependent upon the op's (guitar world) musical knowledge depth. That no artist from the 50s is credited in the top ten is revealing of said op that they don't possess enough information to make a list

There indeed weren't a lot of 50s songs on this particular list, but I'm pretty sure 'Johnny B. Goode' is back from the Eisenhower era. :)

These lists overall are very subjective and inevitably flawed, but I think they're at least good for helping to introduce some younger fans to music they might not have otherwise been exposed to. And they can be conversation starters for us older folks...

10. 'Back in Black' - AC/DC

Let the debate begin (for my part, I would have put 'Layla' by Derek & the Dominos #1...it came in #12)!

1. Johnny B. Goode- Chuck Berry (The perfect Rock song)
2. Back in Black- AC/DC (Regardless of who you are, you know this song)
3. Twist and Shout- The Beatles (Key songs that started British Invasion, perfect rock)
4. Stairway to Heaven- Led Zeppelin (Led Zeppelin's finest moment.)
5. Layla- Derek& The Dominoes (Rock's greatest love song)
6. Purple Haze- Jimi Hendrix (The 60s summed up in one guitar barrier breaking song)
7. My Generation- The Who (First picture of Hard Rock and Garage Rock)
8. Jailhouse Rock- Elvis Presley (The King's Rock N Roll Anthem)
9. Tutti Frutti- Little Richard (Influenced every artist on this list)
10. Peggy Sue- Buddy Holly (Godfather of Rock N Rolls greatest hit)
11. Smoke on the Water- Deep Purple (The riff that help jump start 70s Rock)
12. Twenty Flight Rock- Eddie Cochran (Song influenced every artist directly on this list)
13. Ace of Spades- Motorhead (Rock N Roll in its dirtiest, debaucherist form
14. Rock and Roll All Night- Kiss (Most well known Rock Anthem of All Time)
15. Enter Sandman- Metallica (Brought Metal to the mainstream)
16. War Pigs- Black Sabbath (Sums up what Sabbath is about, one of the greats or rock)
17. You Really Got Me- Van Halen (Pure Energy and Pure Undiluted Rock)
18. Blitzkrieg Bop- The Ramones (Gave birth to Punk and eventually Alternative)
19. Breaking the Law- Judas Priest (Balls to the Walls Rock Anthem)
20. Don't Fear the Reaper- Blue Oyster Cult (Gothic Drug Influenced Romance Rock)

Figured Id show a little more respect to the five men who pretty much invented rock n roll, elvis, chochran, little richard, chuck berry, and buddy holly. whoever voted on that list apparently helps VH1 with all of their "Greatest" lists too, where only the top song is right and the rest are wrong. I gave half $@! reasons, please if you wish to know why a song is where it is just ask, I have a better explanation, i just suffered quantity for quality
