my pop used to be a driver for Yellow Freight in Allentown PA and he said he used to deliver there all the time. He often told me how he could have gotten their guitars for next to nothing when the plant started up, and i shed a slight tear every time he says that to me.

When they first started up? In the 1830s?

from Martin Wiki page:

"The company's reputation and output continued to grow. Forays into mandolin making in the late 1890s and ukulele making in the 1920s greatly contributed to their expansion, and by 1928 they were making over 5000 instruments per year. The company remained family-owned, employing a relatively small number of highly trained craftsmen making instruments primarily by hand. This limited production capacity, and by the early 1960s Martin guitars were back-ordered by as much as three years. In 1964, Martin opened a new plant that is still the primary Martin production facility."

Proud Owner of a D-35 from the early eighties. I have worn that poor instrument out. Countless hours of gig time. One refret, various repairs, yellowed binding, nitro finish that is showing its wear (and does not like surgical tubing). Its been through the wringer. Sounds better today than ever. Needs a neck adjustment but that will be expensive as it does not have a truss rod.

Send it back to Martin for that. They did my 53 D18. Great work.

I've toured the Martin plant three or four times, always interesting. '71 D-35, D-18 Golden Era, 000-16RGTC and I love them all.
