My daughter who's a law enforcement officer in a small town just brought me back a cool little gadget from a law enforcement seminar she attended,it's called the Res-Q-Me. What it is is a little gadget smaller than a cigarette lighter that goes on your keychain and it contains a seatbelt cutter and a spring loaded plunger to shatter windows that are forced closed in case you become trapped in a car. This device could get you out of a real pickle in the nick of time. http://www.res-q-me.com/

With all the canals in South FL, not a bad idea. Most folks down here run the car A/C, windows up, if they go in a canal that would work. Compact size too.

Sounds like a nice little gadget but is it really practical? If you do end up in water by the time you get the keys out of the ignition the car will probably be totally submerged. If you bust the window then you'll have a river of water flowing into your car and you won't be able to get out anyways. You might be better off waiting for the car to fill up and then simply open the door. I dunno, just thinking out loud.

Actually, you'd be better off with the gadget. If a car goes under, the door won't be able to open until the car hits the bottom due to the changing pressure. I can't remember the exact technical explanation, but basically if you don't smash a window or open the door ASAP you're going down...

Handy.

Never mind water applications. There's plenty of crash situations that will damage the door mechanism of your car to the point that it wont open.
After the crash I saw on the A34 this week. I want one.

It's because the weight of the water on one side of the door is pressing it closed. When the car fills up with water there is an equal weight of water on each side so the pressure is equalized and the door can swing freely. If I remember correctly power windows will still work when submerged.
