Hey guys and girls. I assume I'm not the only country fan on here...So my question is, What artists are out right now that still play country and not this new pop/country or southern pop as I like to call it  ? There are a few newer artists I listen to, like Jamey Johnson, Easton Corbin, and a few others but it seems few and far between that a real country artist comes out. So who do you guys like?
I've been listening to a lot of older stuff like Waylon, Keith Whitley, Willie, Vern Gosdin, and George Strait to name a few, but I really like hearing new bands/artists but I haven't had much luck with the new stuff that's out.

George Strait, Brad Paisley, Conway Twitty, Willie Nelson. I'm not that all wild over the newer sound. Can't forget Garth Brooks.

Hmm lets see real country, MERLE of course, Buck Owens (Don Rich was a fantastic tele player) Hank Sr., lately been on a Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen kick. Guy Clark, Townes Van Zant.....Asleep at the Wheel, Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs.... thats all I can think off right now. As you said new country is really southern rock or pop....though Paisley knows how to play that thing.

Buck Owens, George Jones, Merle Travis for the older guys.

for the newer guys, Brad Paisley, Vince Gill, Steve Wariner and Redd Volkaert. Paisley is, well, Paisley. Can't stress enough how killer Gill is as a player, vocalist and performer. Wariner and Volkaert are lesser known but both can pick some mean country guitar.

Check...Check...Check...and...Check...Garth Brooks? not so much...lol. All good suggestions fpbass...but I'm not a big fan of Garth.

Yeah, I have been listening to all kinds of newer country assuming there'd still be some real country singers and guitar pickers out there, but it seems like 99% of the stuff that's out there now is just the same old same old crap.

I actually just brought a Buck Owens record home from my Great Aunt's house. Haven't had it on the turntable yet, but I do like Buck. And Possum and The Hag are shoe-ins IMO. Merle is the standard by which I judge all other artists.

Gotta agree with you on the newer guys too BCB, except for Redd...I've never heard of him before, I'll have to check out his music.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

As for everyone else keep the suggestions coming!

You would probably love Junior brown:

He has his own custom guitar, the Guitsteel, which is half tele, half lap steel.

Jr. Brown is truly the slide guitar answer to Hendrix as far as outlandish dazzle and pyrotechnics go.I have a buddy in Nashville-Eddie Eastman-who still stays true to the old style country. My wife and her sisters are gone to see Vince Gill tonight but these new country guys don't do a thing for me-give me Marty Stuart or Don Williams any day.

Have to say, the real country sound I'll listen to a lot, George Strait. I like the steel guitar and fiddle. I totally forgot Charlie Daniels.

----Danny,

I think at times he really sounds like the legendary Ernest Tubb.

I rather like this "new pop/country or southern pop"......perhaps because there isn't any new "classic rock" being produced anymore.

What's wrong with Toby Keith, Brooks & Dunn, and Little Texas anyway?

Screw the labels, listen to the vibe instead.

That's what the folks are dancing to.

There's a guy here named Johnny Hiland,he can wear a guitar out playing those hot Tele steel licks....he's amazing from what I've heard....about 300+ pounds of guitar burnin' country picker.
I'm sure you can find him on youtube....worth a looksee.
