Took one for the team did ya Rick? I'd hate to see you strain you fretting hand playing too many guitars! :P  I don't think I've ever played a Charvel before, but your description alone makes me want to try out one of the Japanese models, at least that way I can give a second opinion...lol...

yes i did tim. nothing is to good for our friend smokey even if its sending WayCool out on a test drive of charvel guitars. if i didnt have the dang bookeeper with me on this lil adventure i could at the very least show pics of a layaway slip.
but she knows my addiction to these guitars and was on my hip everystep of the way. :(
the only thing worse than having to be responsible is having someone there to make damn sure you are.
go try them tim, try a vintage one out too.

If I come across one anywhere I'll be sure to check it out. I haven't seen a Charvel in any of the local shops for a long time though.

Meh. Very.

I don't like 90% of the 80s "upgrades"...the original was good enough for me.

i dont know the words im looking for here but, you will need to look in "specialty shops" to find them. almost boutique type shops.

Ain't it the truth. I remember a time when the old Charvel Jacksons were all over the place. But I can't remember seeing one in a store for quite a while, now...

you gotta remember, they were discontinued long ago.
most folks have forgotten about them. now that the product line has had life breathed
back into its lungs, getting these back in the hands of the public is gonna take a while.
even though the revamped line is pretty sweet imo, they are just a shadow of the former
product.

i like the colors of the first two. i would like the green with a flat blk pickguard. ive
always liked that color. the gold on the first really stands out too. both colors would be
nice setting here in the "playable" fleet of mine. i think a blk on blk with a antiqued maple neck would look sweeeeeeet! hum....... they do have the custom shop..........

The 80's Charvels were outstanding guitars to play. The current MIJ Charvels are really nice too (great necks).

I have a Charvel model 3 HSS, from about 1986/87. Bright red. Cool guitar.

Don't play it now. A standard Strat is hot enough for me these days. Mine has replacement pickups on, as the original Jackson p/ups were surprisingly low output. The bridge is now an SD JB4 and the 2 single coils are Dimarzios, so it really does rock out when I need a guitar for that sort of stuff. I still have the original pickups so it can be restored to original as nec.

I understand they're becoming quite collectable now, so I may sell it.

My collaborator has a Charvel 475 deluxe with a powered boost circuit. That's another good instrument that he resolves to sell, then plugs in and loses himself for an hour or two..

Great instruments - great quality - and definitely a product of their time..
