Danelectro sounds a lot clearer. Fuzzface has more balls but also sounds murky with chords. Depends on what you're playing. I've been watching ads for a Fuzzface but I'm not sold on it. Was that a newer one with silicone transistors or the older germaniums? Did he say?

Im not sure, on the back it says something in regards about bc108. Is that silicon or germanium?

The problem with most fuzz pedals, and especially FuzzFace pedals is that they vary so much. One pedal can be bass heavy, the next much brighter. Germanium transistors are also effected by temperature.

I find most FuzzFace pedals simply obliterate the signal and rarely sound decent... but they do sound good with the volume on the guitar rolled back just slightly.

I can't deal with that all the time though.

In your video I liked the Danelectro better.

Yea, the danelectro FAB fuzz isn't bad for a $25 pedal. Its brighter sounding than the Hendrix Fuzzface for sure.

The main problem with all fuzz's is the transistors. Whether they be silicon or germanium. Two transistors of the same type and rating can vary wildly. I've seen differences of over 100Hfe between two 2N2222's. Resulting as Nevin said in very different gain structures. Made worse by the transistors placement along the path. E.g a strong transistor delivering 300hfe being before a weaker transistor delivering a max of 130hfe, causes all kinds of horrible cut offs, awkward sounding clipping. When all you want is smooth wool.

The only way I go with my pedals is to audibly check the transistors in their pedals. I go through a fair few till I find a pair I like the sound of. I have a bag of particularly weak 2n1308's that I mix with 2n2222's. I like to have the weaker transistor feeding into the stronger one. The distortion level acts nearly as much as a tone control then. Lower settings being thin and crisp, more gain more fat.

As it's always been with high production manufactured gear. Most of it comes down to the luck of the draw.

I like the Dano better, but if some somebody wanted to give me the Fuzzface, I would take it...then sell it and go buy a Danelectro!

I have a Dunlop JH-2S Jimi Hendrix System Classic Fuzz, and it has the great ability to fuzz up but stay articulate when playing full chords. They were discontinued a decade ago, but I love mine...

That was a rough test. The guy already had a nasty tone and tons of buzz before he even hit the pedals. Fuzz Face for me. I've tried both on my own ages ago and had an original Fuzz Face too way back in the glory days. The Fab Fuzz lacks the complexity of the Face. The fab also sounds like it's price tag and I really like Dano stuff too. Tossing a fuzz in front of an already distorted amp really skews to results. On top of that he's got other effects plugged into it .
