For those that have the Boss FDR-1 pedal, what is your opinion of it? Does it really give a reasonable imitation of a Deluxe Reverb? I am thinking of buying it for use with a solid state Marshall half stack.

I usually practice through a Fender G-DEC 3 which I like the sound of but the Marshall has been setting there quite a while and I want to start putting a pedal board together for it (I just don't like the built in effects). I was thinking that I would start with the Boss FDR-1 and maybe add a delay and chorus pedal along with the Crybaby that I already have. The videos on youtube make it appear pretty good BUT I was hoping I could get some insight from those of you that have it. Thanks......

Run that chain as Guitar>crybaby>chorus>delay>FDR>amp effects return.

Bypass the Marshall sound completely.

No problem mate.
It's a good tip that works really well with a lot of pedals. POD's and other multieffects units especially.
Those effects are basically Pre-Amp units. The same as the preamps that people use in big effects racks. So you lose a lot of the sound that the effect was meant to produce by running into the preamp of your amplifier.
I suppose you could run the effects chain Guitar>Wah>FDR1>Chorus>Delay>Amp effects return. That way you'd be getting on for a sound like a Deluxe Reverb that had been modded a effects loop with a chorus and delay in the loop.

I use the FDR-1 with a Super Champ XD. Even with a small amp like that, the FDR really boosts the tones and really does emulate the original FDR. The tremolo I don't use, but the reverb is great. I actually makes that tinny once in awhile like the original did if you bumped the amp or something.
Not perfect, but really close.

I have the FDR and also the Boss Fender Bassman pedal. They're both pretty good, but I doubt that I'd buy them again if I lost them. The FDR is the better value one, having tremolo and reverb as well as the low to medium gain overdrive. It gives you a nice polished sound and will perk up an indifferent amp. The Bassman simulator has a better overdrive but that's all you get. Worth it though for the extra treble input and more sophisticated EQ options.

Use them on a clean amp ideally, to get the sounds Boss/Fender intended and to sumulate the amps they're based on. But both will work to further drive an existing crunch tone, just like any overdrive or booster will.

The Boss/Fender reverb pedal is superb. But i could never justify buying one. My EHX Holy Grail works fine for now.
