The difference is purely cosmetic, so I don't have a preference. My main Strat has an ebony board, my PRS and my acoustic are rosewood, my American Precision Deluxe bass is maple...

I've heard there is a slight tone and feel difference, but since all my strats currently have a maple, and my only bass (with an Am-Deluxe 5-string J-bass, I don't really need another one) hase a rosewood, I can't really give you a good comparison.

I've only got Rosewood on my Strat, Acoustic and P-Bass. The next guitar I want a Maple finish. I notice that there is a slight warmer tone with the rosewood, but I'm not sure if that is factual.

I like the warmth of rosewood.

I know there's a difference between the two......I mean really, how can a million guitarists be wrong.

I have several roewood necked guitars and one maple, and i feel like the maple is more springy. I have played several maples neck an i just prefer them. I know that there are others on here that feel or hear no difference but i do. I think the maple necks are brighter and like i said are more springy

If you think a guitar with a maple fingerboard sounds "brighter" than a guitar with a rosewood board, you are listening with your eyes. Guitar makers and pickup manufacturers have done blind listening tests, and found that people can't tell the difference between either a live or recorded tone of similar guitars with maple and rosewood fingerboards when they can't see them.

I know this is one of those 'articles of faith" for most guitar players, but it's not true. Fingerboard material does not audibly affect the sound of a solid body electric guitar.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled belief system.

:D

alrightwell as a giging musician I believe that there is a very sutle tonal differance but in my opinion its more of the feel

I think the neck does affect sound as well because to me a guitars sound is a combination of all the parts that comprise it. The neck is responsible for helping the strings remain tight enough to get sound, with no neck, no guitar, and the material that makes up the neck will have an affect on the sound of your guitar. It may not be a direct effect like strings or pickups, but it does affect the overall tone in one way or another based on the woods different characteristics. And regardless of the sound issues, they both have a different feel to me as well...

To answer the original question, I prefer rosewood finger or fret boards on a maple neck than an all maple neck. I think perhaps Gravity Jim may be a bit right if you just think about finger/fretboard material, that probably wouldn't affect sound too much, but I think the neck itself probably does...
