I thought about picking up a bass for fun but will it be hard to learn if I know how to play guitar?
This is a way future buy (after an amp and Stratacoustic) but something I'm considering. Thanks!

Please don't buy a stratacoustic.

To play anything well is hard. To simply put a bass line in is a lot simpler than Learning Chord progressions on a Guitar. Do it it's fun in a weird way... :P

Why not? It's affordable, I like the sound and shape, it's affordable, I don't like large bodied guitars, it's affordable.

Yay! A reasonable response!

+1

Hell I play my guitar every day (ie have callouses) and playing a bass for more than a few minutes can still give me blisters. Definitely start with smaller gauge strings.

I don't play bass a lot, so both of my basses are strung with flat-wound strings for much greater comfort as the night wears on. Also, my fingers don't sweat at all, so my strings don't get corroded like most guys' do.

I've been playing bass about as long as I've been playing guitar and I find creating a good strong bass line to be quite satisfying.

To play bass like a guitar player, it's easy as can be.

Now to play bass like a bass player, that's another story. It's a different mind set. You're not thinking about the chord that's being played like a guitar player would, you have to think way ahead because you're a big part of setting up those chord changes.

Playing a bass is as hard as you make it. Don't complicate it. Start slow and simple.

Exactly! most guitar players want to play bass like they do guitar, one of the few who did it very well and pulled it off was Berry Oakley of the Allman Brothers Band...Duane Allman was once quoted as saying,"we have two little guitars and one big guitar."

Paul McCartney did a great change from guitar to bass also.

1. Playing bass for a guitar picker is relatively easy, especially a short scale bass like the Mustang or EB-0. Tho a Jazz Bass or Thunderbird are no sweat.

2. The cantaloupes in the photo with the dark hair look nice, but kinda with attitude.

The transition from guitar tobass can be relatively easy if you start with a short scale bass such as the Mustang or a narrow neck bass such as the Fender Jazz or Jaguar.Hofner also has a pretty slim neck.I have a vintage Vox violin AstroIV- V273 basswith flatwound stringgs and I adapted to that quite easily.Starting off with just a simple blues progression would get you through most classic 3 chord rock songs and from there the world is your oyster.

RE the Stratacoustic:Don't expect to get the acoustic boom of a dreadnaught or even a parlor size guitar as the size and composite back really compromise the acoustic sound which is a bit on the thin side but not unlistenable-it just takes a bit of getting used to. Where the Stratacoustic really shines is with the Strat neck and when put through an amp. When amplified they sound absolutely great,I regularly play mine through my Blues Jr. and the sound blows me away.

It can be easy for a person who is already good at guitar, with time. It takes a little time to make the adjustment. Then, you can play simple bass lines or grooves and play in almost any situation. You can also decide to master the instrument and find it just as technical and involved as any other instrument, including guitar. I really like John Paul Jones for cool base lines.
